View Full Version : LSD for AWDs
Hi all,
Just a thought, has anyone attempted to fit the LSD from a manual ralliart onto an AWD? Is
it worth doing and is it possible?

seeing as it's a totally different drive train, I wouldn't expect the diff out of a Ralliart to fit.
you'd probably have better luck looking for an EVO VI GT-A diff, as that's supposedly what the AWD drive train is based on.
good luck with it.

There is already an LSD as the rear diff of the AWD magnas. Thats what I remember reading anyways.

that does sound familiar
edit:
the transfer case is common with the Evo VI Lancer, while the front differential is an open unit, the same as for Evo VI RS and Evo VII. The centre differential, which gives the full-time all wheel drive, uses a viscous coupling unit which is shared with the Evo VI. The rear LSD is a mechanical plate type, the same as the Evo VI RS (motorsport version).

The Front is a open Diff, and the rear is a LSD. Had a quick google for front LSD for the Lancer Evo, and they exist, not sure how compatible? Especially with the Auto transmission. would be interesting LSD diffs all round. :D
Yep, currently, the front is an open diff and the centre and rear are LSDs.
I believe the MY05 and now the MY08 Impreza STi's run all 3 diffs of LSD type, i believe this is the only way to get the DCCD system work. Would sure be a damn good idea in the magna if you could get the front diff to be an LSD design too.
According to an article i was reading on the web, the tragic 4WD systems implemented into the VZ commodore/HSV's ran 3 open viscous diffs across the axles

The AWD magna, takes most of its techology from the EVO 7 GT-A, as they were both developed at the same time, and they seem to run similar gearbox sizes & Diff patterns...
The diff arrangements are as follows;
EVO 4 GSR
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: AYC
EVO 4 RS
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: Helical LSD
EVO 5 GSR
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: AYC
EVO 5 RS
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: AYC
EVO 6 GSR
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: AYC
EVO 6 TME
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: AYC
EVO 6 RS
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: Helical LSD
EVO 7 GT-A
F: Normal Open Diff
C: Helical LSD
R: Helical LSD
EVO 7 GSR
F: Helical LSD
C: ACD
R: AYC
EVO 7 RS
F: Helical LSD
C: Helical LSD
R: Helical LSD
EVO 8 GSR
F: Helical LSD

R: AYC
EVO 8 MR
F: Helical LSD

you would have to be pushing an awd magna very hard to need a front LSD
the galant might be a suitable donor?
Or probably more sense to start with a galant in the first place.

^ Yup. Just start with a galant.
I dont think the AWD magna is suited to a front LSD, mainly due weight distribution...
I think its turn in would suffer more...

The largest concern would be finding a diff that had the appropriate ratio to mate in with the rest of the system.
I haven't looked all that hard, but given the AWD system (from after the auto gearbox) is lifted pretty much straight from the GT-A Lancer, I'd imagine the best bet would be to try to find a front LSD that would fit into that system.

If we are talking helical LSDs like in the Evos, they behave the same way as an open diff off the throttle, so have no impact on turn in.
Actually I believe a front LSD would be quite beneficial to the awd magna, as due to being a very front-heavy awd, the inside front would tend to spin up. However it really depends on how the awd system is set up too.
To be honest in a stockish awd I doubt you'd find much gain to be had in a front LSD, simply because there isn't enough power to overpower the front open diff easily. But in a highly modded example with much more power than factory, I imagine a front LSD would make a nice difference.
Mind you, this is nothing more than loose speculation - I've only ever had one brief drive of an awd magna, and it was stock.
However I did do a one day rally course in a 200awkw wrx, and I can tell you the front wheels seemed to be doing most of the work putting power doen out of corners, with the rear's job mainly being to pivot the car on turn-in and mid-corner. Although I'm not real sure if this experience would translate to a high-powered awd magna on tarmac.

why not take everthing from a the evo 7 gta ie all the difs and the GB :)

From my point of understanding, main point would be cost.
GT-A was auto anyways, so no improvement there, but obviously is designed to bolt up to a 4G63 as opposed to a V6 magna engine. I've been led to believe that the GT-A gearbox 'output' arrangement was found to bolt up to the magna auto trans easily enough and why the setup was chosen the way it was.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Have a look at the diagram on the Evolution Net site.
The centre diff is in the gearbox
The front diff is actually in the transfer case.
It would seem that all that is required to do is to swap the transfer cases.
BTW the output gear and helical driven gear to the centre diff are in the gearbox. It may be possible to swap the actual diff casing / etc across. Depends if there is commonality on the actual diff size, bearing sizes and helical gear bolt holes, PCD etc.

From what I've read, the Magna/Verada AWD auto box was from the GTA as well. It has a
different model number compared to the normal FWD auto box. Also, about the fact that
Magnas wont need a front LSD, I have on many occassions, managed to spin up the inner
front wheel. The weight of the car lends itself to that.

Tonba, where did you get that list from?? Its not very accurate..
Evo6 GSR doesnt have front LSD at all.. TME has the front LSD but not the GSR
our cars (evo8 GSR) do have the front LSD though

I think the Evo 6 GSR may of had an option. Apparantly, there are a few GSRs running around with stock front LSDs.
That said, most 6 GSRs will have an open front diff, with the TME having the front lsd.

Hey Guys,
I got that list from my HyperRev (which are pritty darn accurate).
But in saying that, I didnt have it infront of me, and I did it from memory. Ill have another look, and Ill correct it if it is wrong. =D

mate, i have a GSR evo6 sitting in my driveway now (its my bro's) and its defintly open front diff
