Hi everyone my name is Chris and I joined a while back but this is my first post. I have owned a TJ Sports for about a year and my missus drives it daily it`s lowered and has seventeens on it and is also on dual fuel.
Today I decided to change the tranny oil in the tiptronic and two rather large pieces of steel came out of the drain plug, not good i know I was also going to change the filter but I found out that it`s not in the oil pan of the tranny like the usual transmissions I use (TURBO 400`s-350`s and powerglides in the chev cars I also own). Filter cost $144.00 and I don`t think it can be replaced unless tranny is pulled apart.
It still works fine so hopefully it will last a little while yet but last week it wouldn`t change out of 2nd or 3rd (not sure which one) and the Neutral light was flashing which means it needs some sort of repair but when I stopped the engine and restarted it the trans worked fine.
Anyway to cut a long story short is there anyone on this forum or can anyone recommend someone in Western Sydney who is a trans specialist who will do a good job or should I take it to a Mitsubishi dealer who will probably charge an arm and two legs and do a maybe not so good job.
Below is a picture of the two pieces that came out they are about 3 cm long and also a shot of my TJ.

With the prices of auto box's atm and the sheer amount of magnas getting wrecked, my vote is to get a good 2nd hand unit from a reputable wreckers (aka pick and payless) whould be around the 400-600 mark for one thats in good nick (low k's no slipping etc) and just switch them straight over. rebuilds are rather expensive so ive heard.

There's a guy in Girraween on the Great Western HWY called Jim David Automatics.
I had my Cressida's box Overhauled there and a great job was done by all..
Like was mentioned earlier... it's still gonna cost a lot...Mine cost about $1100 but it was brilliant after that....
Prolly do a full tranny flush at mitso before you switch boxes too... can't hurt....
Arm, Legs and prolly your first born... go to pick and payless should be able to source a good 2nd hand unit there for about $500-$600 exchange...
Good chance to do a manual conversion too :bowrofl:
Steve
PS: about time you posted something !!!

I don`t think giving the tranny a flush will replace the two bits of steel that came out of the drain plug which I would say are a part of a circlip or something similar.
Also I gave it a flush today thats how I found the pieces of metal. It is still working fine and I was hoping to change the filter as well until I found out the filter was inside the actual box not just in side the oil pan which I found out after I pulled the pan off.
And as for rebuilding the tranny I was hoping someone on this site might be a trans specialist so they might actually enjoy working on Magna`s and do a good job.
The manual conversion sounds great but also sounds like a big job and will probably cost as much as rebuilding the 5 speed Auto. Thanks Chris.

I think I`ll just keep driving it for now and see what happens. It could of had those bit`s of metal floating around since before I got it. Chris
Can you get a better pic of the metal? Might be able to identify it.

I'd do the same.
When I got the auto flushed for the first time since buying my car, they found a piece of metal floating around in the oil when they drained it. It wasn't as big as yours, but obviously it isn't a good thing. That was 18 months and 14,000km ago and I haven't any dramas since.

Sounds about right, it can be expensive but its a choice you have to make:
1. Buy a cheap one, from the wreckers, might work well for a while and end of being shot within a few months. End up costing $500ish plus labour to install $1000+
2. Pay to get your car's original transmission done, pay double the price, get a warranty for at least 2-3yrs cost 3rd gen $2000 - 2500
At the end of the day when my transmission went I got a rebuild, didnt want to pay one grand and then have problems not long down the track.
The only benefit of a second hand one is if you know what you are doing and can actually open it up and replace the internal parts!
Thats my view

Decided to see the transmission specialist next door to where I do a delivery and he told me if I keep driving it I will completely stuff the tranny because if there is anymore bits of steel in there they will lodge in the pump and jamb it up to. So I have now dropped the car off and in three days I will be $2500.00 worse off, at least that includes a new torque convertor and 2years/40000 klms warranty.
Also have to hire a car for the wife at another $200.00, ah well such is life.
Chris.

Good luck!
I was in Mitsubishi's parts counter in Canberra today and saw lots of posters for "genuine" reconditioned auto + manual transmissions by Mitsubishi. They were a bit busy so I didn't ask how much. I noted that they had a 2 year warranty.

Don't even bother. They are not Mits factory rebuilt - just sublet out by them to rebuilders. I went through 4 (yes, really) of these on my TP before I gave up and had mine rebuilt locally.

Well I got it back today cost $250.00 more than quoted as usual.
Anyway the trans is working like a charm. They reckon it would of been completly shot if I had kept driving with it like it was. Showed me lots of worn out parts the two major parts where I think 2-3 and reverse clutch hubs and second gear was apparently fried.
See how we go this time can`t complain to much as its the first thing thats gone wrong in the year that I have owned it and I don`t think it was to good when I got it as I found a post on here ,from the guy I bougt it from asking questions about slipping transmissions but he did say he sorted it outso who knows.. Thanks all for the advice. Chris.
