View Full Version : TS 2.6 MPI Engine question
Hey guys
I've read that 2nd gen engines have knock sensors, so that the timing adapts to the fuel's octane rating.
Is this true for only the 3.5 MPI, both the 2.6 and 3.5 MPI, or just the 2.6 MPI?
I'm looking at going dual fuel in my 2.6 MPI TS sedan soon and a LPG fitter told me they don't touch the distributor.

2.6 EFI engine has knock sensor - engine outputs different KW and torque at different rpm on different RON fuels - check the back of the owner's handbook.
Same deal with the 3.0 L V6 in a TS.

Thanks for that, MadMax.
Would it help the LPG in any way if I ran 98 RON PULP as the petrol, when I go dual fuel? My gut tells me it might make a smoother fuel-switch.

May be a little smoother, nothing supports why it would be though. It more depends on how good the dual fuel system is though. Personally I wouldnt bother just because you will be running it on LPG 99% of the time.

The knock sensor means the engines will run on 89 RON upwards. The cheapest fuel I can find is 95 octane, with 10% ethanol. Both my cars (TS v6 auto, TS 2.6 manual) prefer that to standard unleaded, and it is cheaper.
98 octane is good when you want max power, but do you drive on a race track all day? How likely are you to have the knock sensor pull back the ignition timing under normal traffic conditions if you run 91 or 95 RON fuel? No, under normal driving conditions the RON of petrol would have no effect on the smoothness of petrol to LPG changeover.

I think the only reason it MAY change over smoother is because the octanes of PULP and LPG are a closer match. What is LPG?? 120 octane?? I think it has a much lower energy output though.
