I've just bought a Ground Effects kit for my 2000 TJ Sports. My local panelbeater wants to charge me about $1,800.00 to paint and fit it.

This seems to be a bit steep to me - can anyone offer me any guidance as to what I should be paying?

I paid just under $1400 and that included the full GE kit, a new grille shell, a new boot trim (the large section that carries the number plate), a full new set of door bottom trims and a pair of XA GT bonnet scoops. That was paying cash, no receipt. I did the fitting myself. So I'd say by comparison the price is about right. But maybe ask how much for cash and see what they say...

Hmm... I'd say $200 a panel tops, that's what the panel beater wanted when I spoke to him about bodykits a year or two back.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. I wasn't too sure about the price but at least now I have got something I can take to my wife and say "Here Dahls, all these experts tell me I'm getting an okay deal".

That should probably get me authorised to move forward and book in a date for painting and fitting ;)

lol lol Tell her that everyone else has had to pay over $2500 for the same job and she will think $1800 is a bargain. Win-Win situation.

Are you serious? $200.00 for rear pods, side skirts, wheel arch flares and the front bar? Sounds a bit too good to be true, who was doing it for you?

Also while you are going coughing up quotes for items, wouldnt mind a rough price for shaving of the aerial and a lower boot respray (bit where the numberplate sits) + blending.

Cheers

.....$600 for painting & fitting of the GE kit, plus 2 mirrors, plus 4 door handles, plus the side strips on the car colour coded!

I reckon $1800 is a little steep. :nuts:

That's pretty cheap... I paid $600 to get the stonechips taken out and a full respray of my VR-X front bumper alone (although $150 of that was fibreglass repairs after I managed to snap it lol).

Where did you get it done mate?

...in Geelong. It's a bit far for you, I think. :D

........although I have to say, the guy realised he'd underquote by a few $100 after he'd finished. :badgrin:

I dunno mate, I love driving long distances since I got my pod filter and my exhaust sorted out, Geelong wouldn't be too bad.

As long as I saved enough on the respray to cover petrol there and back and about 800 cans of V drink I'd be on the Hume Highway in a blink.

Hmmm, looks like it might all be academic.

I have just returned from Canterbury RSL where, earlier this evening, I backed into a Honda Civic and caved in my rear bumper.

This probably means I can get the panel beater to pump the price up for the bumper repair work and then give me a sweet deal on the GE Kit later on.

It will cost me the same at the end of the day but it will be so much easier to sell to the wife ;)

That sounds like a pretty sweet deal, but I think I'm just going to grit my teeth and get it done at the price quoted by my panelbeater - particularly given the bingle in the car park last night.

I'll just have to get a weekend job, mowing lawns or something, to pay the extra! :cry:

Dont rush off and get it done at that price. I'd charge about $800- $1200 (front lip, two side skirts, rear pods and 4 wheel arch flares) fitted. as long as the parts are raw plastic and dont need repairs/priming(a little more if they do). Add in a new rear bar (about $150 -$200 plus $250 painting). You should be able to get the whole lot for about $1800. Shop around as prices can vary alot between smash shops. I also recommend going to someone with a good reputation as if its really cheap you could get a really **** job.

Thanks mate, that's helpful advice. I have a couple of other dings I want to get sorted at the same time, maybe I'll just get the wife to go and do the bargaining for me. My panelbeater won't stand a chance against her...

Couldn't agree more. Tho not always the case, the general rule of thumb re spray work is that you get what you pay for. If the job is cheap, it's usually preparation that's been skimped on and that will show.

Thanks for all your help guys. I went to see my panelbeater this afternoon and he is going to do all of the following for $2,000.00 incl. GST, including allowing me to pay by Credit Card (yay!):-

prime, paint and fit Ground Effects body kit;

repair front bumper compression damage (garage wall) and repaint;

repair large rear bumper dent (Honda Civic) and repaint;

repair small front driver-side door dent (shopping trolley) and repaint;

supply and replace trim at base of windscreen (gradually disintegrating).

repaint rear wing;

prime, paint and fit eyelids (I could have done the fitting, but meh);

remove towbar and supply and fit insert for gap in bumper; and

fit new headlamp.

I'm happy with the price - I've used the company before (I crash into stuff a lot) and they do a great job. I will finally be able to post photos at the end of next week, woohoo! :bouncin:
