View Full Version : Converting 3rd gen TJ taillights to LED

I want to convert my rear stop/tail lights to led's and have through reading various posts, found that it is not as simple as putting in the relevant LED globe.
Apparently as the cruise control is on the same line as the stop tail lights, the cruise control will not work as it senses the current load on the lights to assist in working. One work around for this was suggested that set of globes be wired into the boot on the same line as the LED's but this seems a bit of a dodgy set up. Has any one successfully set up their tails to operate with a resistor? soldered in line with the led's?
My other question is what size led's would I need for the reversing and indicators? (failing this what size are the existing blade globes?

Hmmmmmm, I vaguely remember someone recently saying that putting LEDs in your tail lights was a bad idea as they did not reflect at the right angles in the lenses... Same as putting HID bulbs in your headlights I suppose but that hasn't stopped me!

Your best bet with anything like this PM heathyoung, he knows more about lights then 90% of the members here combined. And also the rear tailight globes arent Blade, they are Bayonets as well.

I believe as long as the type of led has the led's along a stalk as well as in the ends they are ok. In this format they reflect from all sides.
In mine they are like a T5 only bigger. The reverse and indicators are slightly smaller.

i found some LED parkers, i went to ebay and tyed in LED W10 or somthing, what ever type of globes they are, and it came up, you could allways make it i guess, by using a normal globes base, as for the crusie control problem, just wire up a resistor in the line just before it gets to the the lights, test the impedence by using a multimeter on the current globes, and find one a resistor which is the same, or close to the same resistance. thats if indeed the cruise control does rely on a load, i was under the impression there was a switch at the brake pedel, to cut the cruise control, just like on the clutch pedel

You could drill lots of little holes in your lights and poke leds into them, would look cool.

Cummings also has cool as LED rear lights, would love to know how he did it. from what i hear its quite expensive and a bitch to do...

This was the bulb i had intended to use in the tail lamp until i realised that it was the wrong type.

What kind of effects would they have on light output???? would it be a better looking red or just brighter???? I am considering doing this too but I would be worried about the cruise control thing
I know that I might sound like a spoil sport.......
But have you considered if its legal?
As for mucking around with a resistor to make the cruise control work......I'de advise against this.....but thats me, wait until your cruise control doesnt turn off when braking....

u do sound like a spoil sport.
aslong as it doesn't blind you from behind and the colours are the same then it will be legal.. in qld anyway..
and im sure if u brake the the cruise doesn't turn off you will just cancel it on the stick...
however that is just heresay anyway, im sure that the cruise would be hooked up to a switch on the brake pedal just like the clutch.. would make more sense for mitsu to use the same thing.

If the LED's are leaking a current into the circuit and stuffing with the cruise control... you could set up a simple relay for the circuit.... that would fix the problem. And I second QMD///801, as long as they aren't TOO bright and they are the right colour you should be fine

Look im happy for everyone to do what they want.
The smart thing however is to check legalities first.....there's nothing like having your insurance made void when you hit a merc/bmw because you have illegal mods......
I laugh everytime that happens.....

the cruise control must have a switch on the brake peddle because if it uses a load on the tail lights and the globes where blown? would seem like abit of a safety problem 2 me.
if you can find globes to fit it should work just fine.

As it currently stands, the LED setup with back and side facing LEDs do not exist in the wedge setup, only in the bayonet setup. I've been waiting for a long time for this.

Could you change bulb holders for the ones out of another set of 3rd gen lights with bayonet fittings?
