hi all, I just bought a 96 and the windows have factory immobiliser stickers and Im wondering how this works as I only have a std key not one with any sort of buttons in the head,Did these have the keys like the commodores etc with the imm and central locking on them and if so how would I get one considering I bought the car 2nd hand. don't worry buddy, you're alright there. the immobiliser is a device basically built in to deter would-be car thieves who try to start your car without the proper key. having said this, these days 'pro' car thieves would get around this peanut trick easily. don't quote me on this but there must be some sort of chip/magnetic strip inside your key so when you put the key into the ignition, the car acknowledges that the driver is holding the proper key and starts as per normal. without using the correct key, for e.g. like you see in the movies ppl ripping off the panel under the steering column and connecting some wires to start the engine; the computer would 'immobilise' the engine and prevent it from being started in any illegal way. however i am not sure if this is reset upon putting in the correct key or you need to do something to reset the immobiliser. magna keys only have buttons for remotely locking and unlocking the car. there is not extra button for immobilisers. doesn't make sense to have any button for that as well cos you would want it to be armed all the time.

Cheers shaunyeah, you should have a fob with buttons on it (they are not on the actual key. I'd get hold of the last owners and ask them what happened to it, if they don't have it you should be able to go into Mitsubishi, give them you rego papers (proof of ownership) and they'll take the VIN and you can order a new one... not sure of the cost but i think its around $70. (also i'm assuming that all TE+ magnas have had this feature... it would be odd for them not too)
