View Full Version : Engine Replacement For TE

Hi, Looks like I need a new engine for a 1996 TE. 3.0L 24v.
Where do I get a good one in Sydney, and how much? As cheap/good as possible - I have searched here and other places....
Would it be much more expensive, and would many changes have to be made if I went with a 3.5L? I would prefer this option, obviously, but am not to sure about the cost and differences between the two.
Thanks for any advice....

Only things i can answer mate, is 1) ring up many wreckers in your area - yellow pages is your friend
Expect to pay somewhere around the $400 - $800 mark for an engine.
then put asaide another $400+ for all the servicable items - You'd be a fool for not completly servcing the engine while its out of the car.
there are some 3.5L conversion threads on here somwhere - they have alot more torque and a bit more power - probably worth while to do this in the end..
Cost wise they will be about the same - to a wrecker a magna engine is a magna engine!

i did a 3.0-3.5 conversion in my TE. i think the engine cost about $650 for a '99 3.5 with about 90 thousand k's on it from Franks Automotive. while it was out i got the water pump and timing belt done as well with the full 100 thousand k service.
a few problems
1) i think one of the CV joints was different
2) you have to get a section of the exhaust from a 3.5 because it is a longer engine the normal 3.0 touches the sump unless you change it.
3) because it was from a newer model the ECU wouldn't fit unless we changed over the whole loom, so we took the manifold off the 3.0 and swapped it. its the same and didn't have to change the loom.
4)and yes you can use the same ecu.
overall nothing major, and i am happy i have done it now. not only do you get a more powerful engine, but you lso have a 90 000k engine. full cost was about $1200 from memory.
i think thats it....if i think of anything else i'll post it.

Sorry, would it be possible to retain the 3.5L manifold and just solder on the 3.5L plugs to the 3L loom?

Thanks for your help guys...
just on the phone to franks now, will a 2000-2001 model engine fit in my TE?
Edit: he says I will need the drive shaft (i think) and the exhaust from the 200-2001 model too, as I dont have a verada.

There were a few extra and different wires on the new loom than the older one, but the old one works fine.
not sure about the 2000 model needing the drive shaft as i got the 99 model

Ok, Franks Automotive is probably going to do the engine.
Another quick question....
If I take my car to a mechanic, tell him it needs a new engine, but he tries to find the problem and fix it, then says 3 weeks later he cant fix it and that it does need a new engine and I should take it to someone else to get it done. How much am I legally obliged to pay him for his so called "Work"?

OMG, Franks just quoted me $2500 for a 3.0l and $3500+ for a 3.5l. Installed.
There must be someone around that will do it cheaper than that.
Any ideas?
Thanks again for all you help.

hmmm thats weird i got mine form them for $650 but i got my mechanic to install it.
and if the mechanic said they would fix it, and didn't then why should you pay them?

Cool, thanx for that...
Thery are the ones that have a 2000-2001 3.5l engine. Just need to find out whether it fits straight in, if so i will grab it.
There is a mechanic near by that can fit it, he comes recommended in another forum. I hope he gets the job done without too much more pain.

The engine will bolt in, the 3.5 manifold will also work only you will not be able to plug some of the gear in, thus the 3.0 manifold is easier and the actual casting is the same anyway.
There is option 3, a brand new motor never run, have a look at the announcement at the top of the forsale section.
For 3 grand, I would drive to sydney, pick up your car, bring it to Melb, do the conversion then fly you down here to pick it up lol.
Watch the engine pipe, I have the 3.5 one on my 3.0 (was all I could get) but will not fit the other way round

Just to clarify, this engine will fit in?

Thanx for the offer on the new engine, I think 3k is a bit out of my price range for now, but ya never know, i have had so much hassle, just might end up doing it.

Mate, the brand new bottom ends are 650 from the parts clearance centre in Adelaide, brand new motor from mits with heads etc, 1350 add 150 freight at the most and you have a very cheap motor.
When I said 3k mate was more surprised at the fact that they wanted that much for a motor lol
As for the 3.5 anything from 1996 to TL will go in, there is one guy in Adelaide who has recently thrown a 3.8 form a 380 into a TF.....

Not a big deal really, when you think about it, it is still the same design from so many years ago with a little more stroke, no wonder mits went broke

have you seen the 3.8 rods? they look like noodles. would need a bit of work done to support FI, Someone ripped one apart on 3si....very interesting read that was...

They can withstand 7psi no issues aka the TMR 380 has a 7psi pulley on it, and it has bog stock internals. have you got a link to that thread?

Ive been trying to find it for yonks, but he had a whole 74 and 75 ripped apart and compared, and yeah rods of the 75 looked horribly thin.
Ill do some searchin now

the extractors weren't the part that needed replacing i don't think. i think it was one part down that did...the piece that goes under the engine, just the straight pipe with the flex in it.
piggy back ecu would also be fine but the 3.0 ecu works fine in mine.

2 More things I need to know before I go ahead.
1) Do I need to replace C.V joint for sure? Which one? And how much are they?
2) Does anyone know the part number I need for the exhaust for a 3.5? Or know what part I should be asking for, and how much I should expect to pay?
Would it be possible to get this with the engine?

Mate, I grabbed a 3.5 engine pipe from a 3.5 on the weekend for 28 bucks, self serve wrecker here in Melb. Car had 60k on it so is like new.
The drive shaft is the LH one, has a half shaft and I believe the half shaft mount is the one that is different. Should be able to get one of these from the wreckers for no more than 50 bucks.

At least I know where to go from here....
I am going to wait for a few weeks, try and get a good engine and take the car to someone that at least knows how to do an engine change on a magna.
