Hey guys,

I was searching for some random crap on ebay when I stumbed across this;

BA/BF Falcon headunit fascia :D

Anyway it has been purchased and awaiting for it to come in the mail. So now I'm after a headunit.
The only thing need is Bluetooth headset (with microphone preferably) and FULL ipod control (not just aux)
Been looking at the Pioneer DEH-7050BT (http://pioneer.com.au/Products/Car%20Entertainment/CD%20DVD%20Players/DEH%20P7050BT.aspx)

Is there any other units/brands that I should consider?

Nah never got into the whole CarPC scene.. bit too nerdy for me lol Don't feel like formatting my car if the pc decides to die. :bowrofl:

Would be good if it was cheaper and 100 times easier to install/setup.

Shut the hell up :P

I've narrowed it down.

ALPINE CDA-9886
ALPINE IDA-X100
PIONEER DEH-P7050BT
JVC KD-BT22

All these units do pretty much the same thing. My favorite at the moment is the pioneer, ONLY because I'm so used to using them and not much else.

On that note that JVC looks really easy to use. Remote look doesn't look alward or confusing. Going to check them all out tomorrow and make a decision then.

The alpines are really good in terms of sound quality but have always annoyed me with their obscure menu system, and they haven't really upgraded their style over the year.

There's a few things you need to consider for the two main things you are after - blutooth & ipod.

1st, let's look at blutooth.
There are heaps of different 'version's of bluthooth, and also heaps of different products that can do a couple of bluetooth things. As I'm more familiar with the JVC product, I'll tell you what it has that the other may not.
1. Upgradable Blutooth drivers - Blutooth changes all the time, and there's a heap of different versions and sub versions, the BT22 actually allows you to download the latest drivers and install them on the head unit to work with phone's that havn't even been released yet!
2. Blutooth features, most [all?] BT head units are generally able to make/receive phone calls, this is basic. However the JVC also offers SMS notification, voice 'hands free' calling, and best of all, the mic is built in to the unit, so you don't need to run extra wires. However, it also gives you the ability to stream music via blutooth, either using your mobile phone, or the optional blutooth adapter for an ipod.

Now lets look at ipod
First of all, there are many different models of ipod, and because a unit is 'ipod compatible' does not mean it works with all ipods, for the sake of this post, lets assume you have one less than 12 months old.
The JVC unit not only allows you to use an optional ipod cable that plugs in to the dock, it also allows you to use USB iPod connectivity.
Which mean you utilise the USB cable that came with your ipod for functionality to the unit. The advantage of this is that USB is a digital data transfer format, the unique USB For iPod by JVC actually bypasses the audio converter on the ipod [which is poor quality] and only uses the high quality encoder from the JVC head unit, meaning that you get clearer, crisper sound from your ipod. As this USB connection is via a cable at the rear of the unit, you're able to run this cable anywhere in your car so you can store your ipod where ever suits you best.

/end sales pitch :P

i've always found JVC are worth a 2nd or 3rd look, even if you've settled on something else..

very rarely that they have less specifications for $$$ than the competition, and always seem to be the easiest to use.

The JVC one is around the $340 price which is fantastic if you ask me, looks like the newer better version of my HU.

And the remote is WICKED - you can put it on your keychain like a si****!!

They are very easy to use, the alpines have too many farty buttons on the screen, same with the pioneers, never know what im doing with those.
I'm a JVC fan though

I just recently got an alpine CDE-9872E
And this would be my recomendation, considering I payed $240, it can do all of the things you said you want, and is of a reliable brand

iDA-X100 is awesome. Mine was $318 out of Hong Kong, off eBay. Haven't given CDs a second thought since. The 9886 is nice too, but CDs really are pointless in a car.

As tempting as the JVC sounded, looked and worked I settled with the pioneer deh-p7050bt.
There was a few things I didn't like about it.

Normally $680 I got it for $369 mates rates ;)

Now the hard part, installing it :doubt:

Thanks for everyones replies.

Was having a good think and I wasn't happy with the unit I settled with. The display screen was like the old pox pioneer i used have.

Took it back paid an extra $90 and got the next model up

Pioneer DEH-P800BT (http://pioneer.com.au/Products/Car%20Entertainment/CD%20DVD%20Players/DEH%20P800BT.aspx)

Only thing it doesn't have is USB but it has ipod.

Hmm not a fan of the pioneer headunits, I find them an absolute bitch to use, but that one does have every feature under the sun built in. What does this render the stock falcon headunit? Redundant?

Well finally had the chance to install the fascia/unit today.

Very pleased, everything fitted up without a drama. Hardest thing to wire was the 12v+ constant from the fuse box, otherwise everthing else was piss easy. Didn't even need to remove the factory unit

photo inside
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/micjaiy/DSC00386.jpg

as you can see, its in 3rd with the headunit open, there is plenty of space and it doesn't interfere with my driving which was my only concern.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/micjaiy/DSC00388.jpg

Now, I have kept the Hi to low convertors coming from the factory unit, got an RCA to 3.5mm jack cable to run from the convertor to plug into the AUX of the pioneer, this enables me to still use the ford radio and 6 CD stacker with steering wheel controls. MP3 CDs and the ipod run directly off the pioneer.

Does it sound twice as good now that you have 2 headunits?:P

I got last years model - P89 something or other BT. Looks identical, but has 5 band EQ instead of 7.

So far no complaints - though a wierd bug now and then is the EQ changing from 'custom, which is all flat' to 'Powerful'.
