Hi Guys,

For the first time today, my gearbox started to show signs of wear. The gears are still smooth as, no clunking but when i booted it through the hills at high revs changing into second gear i heard a high pitch noise like a belt slipping. any ideas on what this could be, the car has done 175 *** and a fair few mods under its belt.

Thanks mike

My 2000 Verada did that.

Only ever north of 5000rpm though, so very very rarely heard it. Car had ~125000km on it.

Was it a squeak sound? If so its just belt slip, probably from the aircon if it was switched on.

is it like a flaring sound???? the revs get a little higher but lags on changing down? I just changed my oil twice in 20000km and it went away. I change it every 30000km these days.

The aircon wasnt on, and the gears changes were nice and smooth as per normal

Yeah just sounds like belt slip, if it annoys you just replace the belts, or just put up with it. Nothing to do with the tranny, as a lot of SC guys are putting a lot more grunt through there auto boxes with no issues.

That's not what mine sounded like, was a very little squeak for a split second.

Yep, Mine does this..... as soon as i bought it a year ago at 60,000k's

It's the tranny.....
High pitched sqealing noise.. I think it's called a "transmission squawk"

Some Saab's had the issue along with Volvos... apparently it's the brand of tranny fluid you use and the additives that's in it.....

That's about all I know.... Mitso just wants you to pay thousands for either an overhaul or a new box......

It's only when I thrash it..... in full auto not tippy.

Be interested if anyone else knows more on this squawking..

Steve

Sounds official.

Are you using genuine Mitsu ATF? Never thought to check for the noise after I had my tranny flushed, just kinda got used to it when I'd go for the occasional fang.

Yeah Last service was done by Mitso 15,000k's ago... so I'd be safe to assume that's what they use.....

To double check...I looked on an old bottle of Dexron III fluid I have left after my Cressida, and it explained WTF it was.
Specifically to stop the noise in Volvo's and Saabs.

Dunno...much else..... if mine packs it in... I'm gonna put a manual in it..
I freakin' hate autos.... Though the Magna VR-X ones are quite good.....

Thought mine was the only car that did it.....
Wouldn't worry too much about it...

It's no secret the Auto box's are crap in mitsubishi's

Just a quick note, try not to drive with any buttons on like over-drive and A/t mode or whatever 3rd gens have, I believe over 80kph is when they should be engaged to hold the revs

The tomato box in mine literally detonated at some 200 G over a year ago. It was quite slow to change between D and R and occasionally slippy. Can't say about noises cos the car is noisier than anything else. Be prepared....

:stoopid: that would be because they are already 4 speeds, not 3 and overdrive. Also, they probably realised that power buttons were a waste of time when ya foot is thu the floor anyway, besides they are learning box. and then tippy came in as well.

Lenda have you had any luck or is is still the same

Well thank the auto god for that, they are still crap.

They are plagued with problems and the forum's old threads have a good percentage about problems with the Auto and people complaining / asking info.

Good luck with it - rebuilds cost $2000+

?? They really arent that bad for an auto.

They are certainly MUCH better than the 4sp slush boxes from Holden, Ford and Toyota thats for sure.

Sure, they are certainly off the pace against the manual, but they are good gearboxes that always seem to find the right gear in any situation. You hear a few stories on the web and come to the decision that the boxes are plagued with issues? I am sure the other 40,000 Magna's and Verada's on australian roads are doing just fine, bar a couple of ill-maintained/old-age examples that float about on an obscure internet forum.

Dont get me wrong, i hate autos as much as the next person and wish every day that I bought a manual instead of mine, but i can live with it and i will continue to live with it until i have run the car into the ground

Like with the rest of the car, if you look after them, they will be fine. Unfortunately the service intervals dont cover enough changes. People will change their engine oil more often than whats recommended but forget about the tranny oil.

Last year i got organised a full mistu remanufactured box for a KF from mitsu dealer for $2100fitted. in and out in one day, so yeh not cheap, but nor are clutches for manuals.

I have a 5 speed too, so it may be an advantage over the 4spd.
