Hey all
Ok first off I'll admit I;m and idiot and I shouldn't buy car parts from ebay.

This is for a 1st gen TP
Basically at the beginning of this year my CV shafts were both stuff and needed replacement. I grabbed a recoed pair for $180 from ebay and fitted them with no issues. 5000ks later they were stuffed again, I'm told this is not uncommon for ebay cheapies.
Ok so last month a set about getting a new pair, I got a set of new shafts with a 12 month warranty for $88 each from a place in melbourne. I thought the price was little low but they had a warranty and I they were listed in a thread on here saying they were decent.

The left side fitted fine but when I went to fit the right hand side I found the shaft was too short. Once the outer joint was fitted to the wheel hub the inner was about 10mm too short to seal the oil seal in the side of the diff. Today I took the new shaft and the old shaft (ebay one) back to the drive shaft place to see what was up.

The guy there had a look both shafts and said something was wrong, the new shaft he had sold me was 610mm long vs 620mm for the old one, he called up his supplier and yacked on to him for a bit and measured all the different bits of the shaft, before both of them deciding I was wrong and the shaft should work. They told me that the old shaft was too long and had now probably stuffed my transmission.

So now I don;t know what to do.
1) Is it likely the driveshaft place his stuffed me up and now won;t admit it?
2) If I had fitted a shaft that was too long would it have stuffed the diff or just the oil seal?
3) Any ideas how to fix this mess?

Any help is appreciated and thanks for listening to my story.

Did you specify whether it was for a manual or automatic transmission? As I believe that one is shorter than the other.

Yeah they are ment to be autos and at first I thought that may have been the issue but the supplier said both auto and manual ones are exactly the same.

I just called mitsubishi spare parts who want $279 a side and also say the auto and manual ones are the same.

Hmmmn, ok. Posts ive read on here have led me to believe otherwise, but anyway.

If the other one was too long, was there any forcing, etc when you first put it in? Or did anything seem out of the ordinary during installation?

Yeah i thought they were different too. The longer one fitted in fine sealed properly.

you're talking about 3rd gens then the manual 3.5lt half shaft on the drivers side is approx 10mm longer than all other 3rd gen transmission types.

Maybe the suppliers and muppets at Mitsubishi didn't know what to look for then? *shrug*

Sorry forgot to include its a first gen here.

I am beginning to think the supplier's got it wrong. The guy at Mitsubishi didn't sound that confident in his answer.

Mate, Have a first gen TP auto shaft here that you can have for $20 bucks. Is second hand but in great condtion.

Now this is scraping the memory barrel here but.....

The shafts are the same length, I have a feeling the second gen shaft is 10mm shorter or the 4cyl. The spline size on the second gen 4cyl from memory is the same on the first gen, shaft length was the difference.

At worst you can come and measure this shaft to check which one you should have but having said that with the DOJ joint (inner joint) 10mm should make no difference unless the inner DOJ is not working properly thus is faulty.

Apparently thats the answer. I called up the shaft place again today and was told they have a TM shaft which is 10mm longer, matching the old shaft I pulled out, so I'm going back tomorrow to exchange them.

Ok thats a little weird.

So the saga continues, I went back today to get the TM shaft that was 10mm longer, turns out it was 20mm longer and has a different outer joint. So I've left my old shaft with him and he;s going to rebuild it.

Probably the best solution given the clear knowledge of Drive Shafts this guy has displayed to you on previous visits. :doubt:

I would have told the guy off and got my $$$ back and gone elsewhere.
