Hi everyone,

One of my Magna's that hasnt been going for a while (mainly due to this problem) is giving me some troubles!

Whats happening is the car will turn over for a bit, fire, run for about 5 seconds and then stall... no matter how many times it fires it wont run for any longer.

It is up on a single car ramp under left rear wheel so is sitting on an angle and to me it seems like some sort of fuel issue but just thought id post on here for any other suggestions!

Tomorrow i will push it off the ramp and see if having it on level ground makes a difference.

However, it has an alarm/immobilizer poorly fitted so im not sure whether that could be playing a role... though id imagine an immobilizer would prevent it from starting at all? Normally?

Have put more fuel in the tank and no change.

Its a GT Magna so fuel injected, automatic.

Any ideas?:)

Alex.

Tried checking the Idle speed control motor. If you turn the ignition to ON the motor should slightly open the throttle valve, it should close again ~15 seconds later.

Umm, if the ISC motor thing doesn't work there is two wires you can connect to switch the fuel pump on, try doing that.

not going to be the most helpfull post here but here goes :)

when the car dies, does it splutter and cough and fart then die? or is it just a clean stop dead?

how much fuel is in the tank? if its got more than half a tank then it being on an angle shouldnt be too much of an issue as the pickup will still be submerged.

other things it could be, could the the relay for the fuel pump isnt staying open (open is on isnt it?) from when you release the key from the cranking position and its just running on whats left in the lines.

try priming the fuel pump a couple of times - key from acc to ign and back again 3 or 4 times, you should hear the fuel pump whirring away for a second or so. see if that makes a difference to how long it runs maybe.

When you turn it just to on, is there a whir and click?

Is there petrol in the tank?

all the above

fuel pick up might be the issue if the tank is on a slope

check for vaccume leaks/air snorkle cracks

first thing i would do is remove the car alarm if it is improperly fitted, sounds like this could be the main issue. I highly doubt that it being on the car ramp would have anything to do with it at all due to the fact that no car i have every heard of would not start when i a hill...

thanks for your thoughts,

to be honest havent tried much since the last post except ive rolled it off the car ramps and now it wont fire at all... theres some fuel in it, well in my experience, enough!

Anyway, its not in the way nor a sellable car (in that noone wants a magna!! unfortunately) so its been put on the backburners as my gsr sigma has just blown its head and a lancer of mine has been doing the same thing as the magna, in that i changed the fuel pump and it ran fine for 100kms then i left it just sitting and running for a few mins and its started doin it again (not firing!) so i dunno if the fuel pump i put in (out of a wreck) has haddit too, unlikely but hey, thatd be typical!

But yea, feel free to add any thoughts coz when i get around to looking into it further ill definetly be reading all the posts carefully! Is it easy to change the fuel pump in a tp? i think you have to get under the car by the looks, got plenty of spares hehe so i may give that a go if its nice n easy just for the sake of trying!!
