Ok, after a week I'm sick of the stock system in my 98 TF exec. So custom system is going in!. Budget is rather tight at around $1000. Here is what I've come up with.

JVC KDSX995 - $374
Response 4x50WRMS Mosfet Car Amplifier - $205
12" Response Venom Subwoofer 4ohm - $85
6.5" Kevlar Split Speaker System (Pair) - $159

Install - $200ish

Going to keep my 6x9s in the back and run a high pass filter or chuck at resistor in or something, and get rid of the bass...

So what do people think?

install it yourself slacker!

then u cn spend that 200 bucks on an amp wiring kit!

lol i would, but i've got no idea how too. I've only basic electrical and mechanical knowlage. And have never attempted anything of this kind before.

I don't really feel like stuffing up my brandnew car and or stereo gear...

It's easy and you can't stuff up! No doubt someone in Melbourne will help you out aswell!

TE's are a bit harder to get the dash out but there was a guide on the aussiemagna site on how to do it (It's not there anymore).

As long as you've got a multimeter to find +, c+ and - you can't really do that much wrong.

Sounds like a great system on a budget ;)
Also have to say try to install it yourself ....its not as hard as it looks :D

i'm still not convinced, lol. I don't have a multimeter but i guess i can get one from some where. Does anyone know if the tutorials for removing the dash, door trims etc are still online some where even if not linked from the main site?

where abouts are you? if your near by then i could give you a hand.
also id strongly urge you not to get the response splits. While they are cheap they are very poor quality. The tweeter is too bright and the woofers dont last very long.
put the $200 for install towards better speakers and wiring. While you might not think it the wiring contributes a fair amount to cost.

i've said it before and i'll say it again. Save a bit more cash and get some higher quality gear. I know some people don't really like spending a great deal on stereo gear when they first start off, but if you get something decent to start off with, then it will be longer until you feel the need to upgrade.
If nothing else, get a better quality sub. The venom's go loud, but they really don't sound very good at all.
I know and expect there to be some flaming of this post, but try and keep it reasonable ;)

Other than that, grab a carton of beer and invite one of the fellas around to help you install it, i know that beer has always been a good incentive to get some help from my buddies. You might just learn a thing or two about installing stereo gear and how easy it is!!
Good luck!!

Cheers,
Cam.

ok well assuming i install it my self and still have my current budget of $1000. Assuming i keep the same HU and Amp that leaves me with $421 for the speakers/sub, what do you reccomend?

it sounds pretty good, but honestly i'd get rid of the 6x9's (leave the grills there) and let the bass flow into the cabin more, and i'd go with a response sub, not the venom.. i haven't heard anything good about them!

Rusty

what the? the response sub is a venom sub. according to http://www.advanceae.com.au/ its a 12" Response Venom Subwoofer 4ohm. So you rekon i shouldnt bother with any speakers in the back at all?

As i see it, you have two options.
Buy a nice set of splits for $250 and spend the rest on 6x9's.
OR buy an ok set of splits and spend the rest on a subwoofer.

With your limited budget it really does make things hard. However, i would strongly recommend against buying from response. I know a lot of people here like the bang for buck, but i really just can't see it as a good way to spend your money.
When buying your speakers, make sure you stick with well known brands (Alpine, Eclipse, Cadence, JL Audio, or even   pioneer and kenwood).

As i said elsewhere, listen to everything, it is worthwhile doing your research, and choose the speakers that YOU like the best. You may not even end up getting a pair of splits, you might find a nice set of coaxials. Just find what you like.
Also, the prices listed on the wall at car audio places arn't their best prices, tell them you are looking around and you want to know the best price that they can offer you.

Best of luck.
Cam.

i'd say cut the jvc to the lower model mp3 one (it used to be the 795/785, but i think its just been replaced) and spend the extra money on a better set of fronts or even the subs....its just my opionion but why not spend the good $$$ on the stuff that will actually make the sound....

i mean u cant listen to pretty moving pictures when driving.

oh and seriously, i keep saying this cause its my favourite, but look out for good quality goods 2nd hand on tradingposts/forums/ebay etc. You can get a great system for under 1000 by buying 2nd hand imo... Mine cost less than $950 (i did all install myself), all second hand cept the jvc

JVC 845 mp3/cd hu
PG Tantrum X 6.0 Comps
JL Audio 12w3 D2
Coustic 480qe
Clarion SRR something i cant remember for rearfill, some G-spot sounddeadening, and i used to have an Audison LX2.24 x-over that still kept it under $950

Get the mp3.. you wont regret it. Why dont you try say some Hertz entry level gear.. ESK 165 splits are $229, ES 300 12inch sub is $199 which together gives you $7 over the $421 you wanted but i think with some haggleing you could get it down further.

as ive said on another post ive put some ESK hertz plits in a mates car and they go very nicely. and Cam hes on a very tight budget for a decent set up which means that if he wants it now hes not going to be able to get tbrands you name.

The HU is ok id stay with that choice as well as the amp.
The ESK splits for front and just some simple 6" speakers for rear fill and then a sub with whatever money you have left.

ok, does anyone know where i can get the eks 165's in melbourne? and then what kinda sub would i be looking at?

I really do want a stereo now but if worse came to worse i could just buy the sub at a later date when ive got more money...

Well your looking at around $200 for a sub.. then you got to ask yourself.. what is more important SPL or Sq, how big do i want the box, how much room do i want the box to take up, what db would i be happy with etc etc. Ask Fhrx what he would recommend for $400-450 with splits and a sub and he will most likely do you a deal :D They mail to anywhere in the country.

email him at fhrx777@bigpond.com.au

www.rmaudio.com.au

just find all the melbourne dealers and ring em up to ask them if they have it on the demo boards. Remember speakers are all a personal taste. I used to have the Hertz HSK 165s, and it wasnt my personal favourite (the midbass was excellent though), but other people swear by it
