Today I replaced the D light behind the instrument cluster. YAY! Even a girl can do it.:D

I figured I may as well do it because I had a screwdriver out to replace a tailight globe...and, yes, I know I've had the D light globe for nearly a year.

Anyway, I followed Nexus's instructions here http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25726

BUT! When I was putting the front cover back on there was a distinct chink of metal falling behind the steering column.

It didn't fall out the bottom, so it's probably stuck somewhere in there. I pulled the cover back off and had a look at the two metal 'hinges' on the sides of the cover and they were both still there.

I grabbed a torch and had a quick look, but couldn't see anything.

Now I'm just hoping it isn't anything serious because I continued to put it all back together, gave it a clean and started up the car to make sure everything is working.

What could it have been?

*edit* this is not something to tell my hubby, OK!? :D

was the so called chink a big one or a small(faint) one?

a little one...that's why I thought it was one of the 'hinges'...what are they called? the things that grab onto the plastic...i'm having a mental blank:redface:

dont really think it is anythink too serious, since it was jus a little "chink". so im guessing the dash is in properly. i wouldnt really be too bothered about it.

#1 lesson in working on cars.... there are always some bits left over.... in your case u just can't find what it is....
i would just wait and if something goes wrong u will know it was because of that piece of metal :bowrofl:

I was thinking the same, but if something goes wrong and hubby finds out, he won't be happy.

I've got the Gregory's open here and have learned the front cover is called the surround panel.

itll be one of the metal clips that slip onto something, and provide a thread for screws to tap into, nfi what they are called but all they do is hold things in place properly, worse comes to worse, it landed somewhere that ends up shorting out 2 wires and frying your entire ECU, no biggie :P

yep i reckon this hit the nail on the on the head!!!

did you find a screw that wouldnt tighten?

i doubt it will short anything out.... 99.9% of the wires are well protected to prevent earthing out....

lol

Ummm, yep, the screw on the top right of the surround panel wouldn't tighten no matter how much I turned it, so that must be it.

Thank you, Sir Scarealot Woob.:)

If I can find the time to retrieve it before it shorts out my electricals  then I shall pull off the bottom steering column cover.
