i currently own pioneer 6" 3 way coaxials and am thinking of upgrading to either jl or alpine type r splits, the guy at jb reccommended the alpines but then i asked him what else is good around the same price, and he showed me some jl splits which were slightly more expensive, so i am wondering who has what and can say one is better than the other?... plus i have searched the forums and i cannot seem to find how to install splits by myself... also the type r's are 6.5", will they fit in the stock mounts or will i have to make the hole larger?

If possible, audition speakers before buying them. Definately be wary of someone who works at JB. Many other options out their.

Their are heaps of threads about speaker installation. Basically you can fit a 6 or 6.5inch woofer into the doors with the factory plastic mount. Mount your Xover away from power sources and your tweeters where you want them, ideally in the kicks or in the A pillar.

Well since she works there she should get you a good deal on some Pioneer PRS splits. They are about the only decent splits they usually keep. But of course have a listen and see what you like.

i think they had those, are they better than the jl and alpines?

I quite like my Alpine Type R splits. Larger the better as factory Magna speakers are ~17cm. Treble is a bit harsh though, even set to -3dB. Should try -4.5 or -6dB.

The PRS set are a lot more money though. The TS-D series would be more on par really. As I said if you must buy from JB, listen to all of them. Even though they are on a demo board you will get some idea.

SupremeMoFo have you tried moving your tweeters into your kick panels? :D

No, could never ever be bothered. Dash installation was much simpler.

i was told that installing the tweeters into the top of the dash or the door near the windows would sound s***... opinions?

Sounds OK. Harsh, but soundstage is great IMO. Then again, I don't really know enough to be that great at assessing it.

I'm gonna presume you listened to both the speakers shown to you, so which do you think sounded better? That's your question answered.

I personally prefer JL Audio speakers to Alpine, but I know people who think the other way, its all personal preference.

the more important question... Please tell me you'll be running them off an amp? if not then i would never go higher than type s in alpine. or even the tsd's in pioneer. and never the PRS's.

There is nothing wrong with any of these speakers. im running PRS's front and rear. but if your not going to power them properly then dont do it. get some cheap speakers that will be happy to run off the deck (which is hopefully aftermarket)

my current system is amped, just looking to upgrade sound quality a bit, so they will be amped...
