I've been contemplating putting a Double Din head deck in my car, and the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD,
http://www.cardiscountstereos.com/Images_For_Catalog/AVHP4000DVD.jpg
and this looks the goods with USB, DVD, MP3, Touchscreen. Bluetooth adapter for Phone..
But at 1299 in australia, they come up a bit dear, in the United States the RRP is 499....
and much cheaper if bought online...
I'm a bit cheesed that pioneer are robbing us blind so I wanted to import one..
There is a bit of a compatibility issue with the radio frequencies. I know AM is not compatible, but what about FM... Has anyone bought a US headunit and help shed some light on this stuff?
Is there another way to get an OZ compatible unit?
The DVD region lock is an easy work around..

Checked Pioneer's website????
MSRP on is US$500 so surely it's available for less than US$499... how important is the warranty to you?
According to Wikipedia the US uses the same FM frequencies as we do, 88-108MHz.
I've bought an Alpine headunit from Hong Kong, haven't had a problem, mind you - I probably only would've done it with Alpine because of their extremely low failure rate.

Yeah its cool ey. Short of getting a Car pc, these are a good compromise at 350 US dollars, add a reverse camera 125 US dollars, and the bluetooth kit, I'd have a good system only lacking GPS...

I put one of those in a Mazda 3 for a mate. He likes it, has good Ipod control and decent movie quality. Dont like the menu's in comparison to the normal Pioneer units but you get used to it. If your happy to burn dvds via dvd shrink etc to make them region free you will enjoy this unit.
Considering that JVC and Sony both make units under $800 with bigger screens and similar features with full Australian warranties and Region 4 dvd, maybe you should look around. I know Ryda sell the JVC's for cheap and Strathfield sell the Sony's cheap as well.

They're pretty nice, although the screen is on the small size and I don't really like the menus either. The volume knob on the side is possibly the least tactile thing I've ever laid my hands on though.

The screen resolution on this player is pretty low, so I don't expect great dvd veiwing, but I don't want it for that, just the jukebox capabilities, a bluetooth add on, the touch screen, and more power than the OEM deck, and it's also got 112 different button color illuminations and 5 or 6 screen colours.....
