View Full Version : Replacing snapped aerial on TJ
I did a search for this before posting but didnt find anything...
Im a pretty big noob when it comes to car stuff (and doing stuff with my hands in general), but was wondering how easy it would be to replace the aerial myself? About 3/4s was snapped off ages ago and i just am at the point where i want to replace it. Stock TJ.
My questions are
- Is there a direct replacement i can just buy from an autobarn or similar?
- Is it easy? Does anyone have a guide on how to do it?

Search electric, antenna in this section.
Just go to Autobahn and get a generic electric antenna. ~$70.
Takes about 30 mins to install if you are cluey and able to get the old antenna out in one peice (I was not). Took me 2 hours, but very worth it.
Argh i thought i mentioned but obviously didnt, the antenna is NOT electric. All i need is a new mast. Ive read a few threads and figure itll be easy enough, hopefully!

How much to have aerial shaved? Present it to a bodyshop aerial-less and say "blank off the hole"?

Anywhere from 400-650 as they will have to blend the boot lid and the bumper as well so it doesnt look out of place.

I suppose at that price, it's not an electric aerial.
But 20 for genuine is cheap....
But just about every TW electric aerial I have seen is knackered...

I think the $90 is for the mast and the rope only and the $400 is for the whole unit. Thats how much Mitsu quoted me when the rope inside the antenna assembly snapped. That is what i thought initially $95 for brand new electrical unit. Until I showed up to the parts department. The guy told me to have the whole electrical unit replaced it would cost me $425. :noway:

Read this (http://aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45759) thread re my experience in replacing the stock serial with an electric one.
That should help

will TL one fit in a wagon?

You're better off just converting to electric, no worrying about snapping it or getting it snapped again. Easy installation.
1. Power wire (12V on HU)
2. Ground wire (Any random grounded bolt)
3. Remote wire (Usually labeled ANT REM on HU harness)
4. Antenna wire (Self explanitory)
Plus, electric antenna adds a bit of class.

Need to have those blended so the fresh rear quarterpanel doesnt look out of proportion to the rest of the car, same deal if having a door or a bumper sprayed, any decent panel beater can blend the surrounding panels so it matches the rest of the paint work.

I had to replace a snapped (non electric) aerial on a TJ recently, it was dead easy just head down to super cheap and pick up a replacement (the brand is aerpro) but make sure you get the one that includes the base AND the mast not just the mast only because as I found out the hard way the replacement masts do not fit the original base. it was around $50.

Pretty sure they dont. theyl only spray the area up to a hard line (end of a panel or a bend in the panel etc) thats what variance in the colour is for. theyl mix the mitsu colour then take it out to the car, look it against surrounding panels and then make it darker or lighter to match the fade etc of everything around it. and considering where the ariel theyd probably only need to respray the top on the quarter panel because its angled to the sky and the rest of the panel is on a different angle so ud never be able to pick up a difference in the colour because ud never see the 2 parts on the panel in the same light. also thatd be a sh**load of work to sand back all the surrounding panels just so u can paint up a little hole the size of a 20c piece lol.

So has anyone managed to find an aftermarket or other replacement antenna with wires to connect a 'halfway' button so they can be wired up correctly in Veradas?????

Im a prefectionist though, even though ive done the cutting etc on my current paint, it garaged most of the time and has been all its life the fresh paint will still look weird compared to the rest of the area, hence get such a large area blended so you cannot see it.
