My russian is a little rusty but it does look like a parcel Sub. Would of been a great addition to the 3rd gens too i reckon.

I can tell you for a fact that the Mcintosh premium audio system in the 4th gen Subaru Liberty sedans features an 8" sub in the parcel shelf.
The MY05/06 models have a 13 speaker system and the MY07/08 models gained an extra speaker somewhere to 14 speakers.

14 actual speakers or like 4 speakers with 3 tweeters in each

If you take a look in the boot under the parcel shelf of a TE/TF you can see there is a spot for a sub to be cut into the shelf.

ford had these in the fairlane and fairmont

TF on you'd need to cut the shelf which is illegal without the certificate. On TE/KE you just unscrew the plate and screw the sub in. I've been interested to try this myself in the past, though I don't know of anything decent to suit. Has to be an open air sub to operate efficiently.

Would sound like crap. would rattle that flimsy metal to the ****house

I don't think it'd sound as good as a enclosed sub, but I don't think it'd sound ****. Its essentially doing what a 6x9 does, to a greater extent, and I've never seen a 3rd gen parcel shelf rattle from vibrations. I'd willingly try it.

lol have a listen to my car, parcel shelf is very rattly. But in saying that an 8 inch sub probably wouldn't cause that much of a vibration issue.

']14 actual speakers or like 4 speakers with 3 tweeters in eachhaha, we're not talking Pioneer/Sony **** here. It sounds a lot better than the muddy Bose crap fitted to Mazdas, etc. Only 1 pair of speakers are 2-way coaxials as far as I know, so you can count 11/12 speakers all up.

Remember the parcel shelf is part of the structural integrity of the car, its not a weak item. To stop the rattle if any you do exactly what you do with any other part of the car, you sound deaden it.

you sure dont like being "wrong" dont you, im sure he is saying that a subwoofer would cause alot more rattling on what is a thin piece of metal than the conventional 10ish mm mdf sub box in the boot that is only touching the carpet floor. dont know why anything else needs to be said

I'd be inclined to agree with Lugo here, I'd sure as hell hope it was rigid enough to cope with a small sub.
If not, where the hell are my split fold seats dammit? Ski ports don't cut it.

I didnt care about proper addition at that exact time
Rhys - what ts3.0 said
A sub box is usually 12MM MDF MIN
A parcel shelf is 1mm metal about a meter wide, go figure what will rattle more under the same conditions, but hey put a sub in your parcel shelf all up to you
its only going to 1) make your car a target to theives with a fully sick sub in full view of everyone who walks past and 2) more then likely not go loud

im going to agree with Lugo aswell as TUFFTR.
Lugos right, the parcel shelf is a part of the vehicle structure and should be strong enough to cope with an 8' sub. Also, I dont see nything on it that would rattle, correct me if im wrong, but the parcel shelf seems to be one layer of metal,as oposed to say, the bootlid where there is the frame and the skin.
Having said that, the placement of the sub there would mean that extra vibrations would be sent through the cars structure making things like doors, boot and roof rattle alot more than if enclosed in an mdf box.
Yann is spot on. Its no different to putting the sub in a box in the boot, if you just install it and let it go watch the rear end of the car rattle to the ****house. So what do you do? You sound deaden any parts of the boot, floor, side panels that do vibrate and rattle. Exactly the same with the parcel shelf, you install the sub, fire it up, find out whats rattling as a result of it and sound deaden away. There's no real difference.
The quality of the sound is another story, but then I've been in many a car with parcel shelf subs and I've never heard a bad one, so I'm sure you could make it pretty decent.

Do it, I wanted to see how it go. I'm really after for this one as my next project. Yeah, the sound quality is another story... but since I'm only after for a little boom without sacrificing the boot space and adding unnecessary weight, then this is a go for me.:)

They work well enough.... best to cut a 10mm mdf sheet to go under the parcel shelf to take some of the drone/flex from the parcel metal for sound quality.
and like stated. good for those that need bootspace.:D

Thats it
If your gonna piss fart around sticking a wang size sub in your parcel shelf mightaswell do it properly and get 2x8" drivers and stick them in the door for some proper midbass

Single 12" if you're selfish and only want to enjoy your music yourself and not let the whole 'hood partake in it.

Depends on the 12 you choose and the power you are willing to give it ;)
Rear parcel shelf has been done to death, get over it and put a sub in the boot. When decent 10inch subs use only 0.5cuft and some 12inchers working in 1cuft, I don't see a problem with losing your precious boot space. Build a bridge, or better yet - build a custom sub box.

That means that my car has......... 16 speakers all up:nuts:
Car manufacturers say that CRAP just to make it sound
great to the people that don't know better.
When infact my 16 speakers is only 8.

Seriously. A marketing department bends the truth to convince consumers that their **** smells sweeter than the rest.
I had a Panasonic 2.1 stereo a while back which was rated at 540wRMS. Did I believe that? Nope. And of course, the actual number of speakers means 2/3rds of SFA in the first place. That said, the Mcintosh system in the up-spec Liberties is pretty much as good as it gets for a factory system at that price point (up to $60k).
