ok well when i first bought my car i had problems with smoke, i couldnt even go through Macca's drivce through coz it would smoke the place up, The problem is infact the Valve stems , yaaay u got it right, and yes u have to take off the heads and the intake mani to get to them and everything else, the valve stems themselves arnt that expensive to buy, infact i think VN commadore ones are the same (dont quote me on that, i know they are the same as V something commadore) but changing these are very messy, u'll need to buy new gaskets and oil and might aswell do it all, i was lucky coz my mate knew how 2 change them and only charged me $200 all up (mates rates) :D and when we finished i left my car running idle for about 30mins to clear everything out of the exhaust (it would smoke abit while doin this but it will stop), hows ur engine goin? is it worn out? have u got a compression test?? coz if it too much worn out i might suggest u 2 go look for another engine, coz it would be a waste on getting all of it done with the engine on it way

The other cheaper reason might just be there is too much engine oil in there ;)

Its very possible to change your valve stem seals with the head on.
I know this since I've helped Mal (Madmagna) change valve stem seals with the head on.
The obvious signs that it’s your valve stem seals on the way out, if it mainly blows smoke on start up & after idling for awhile & then hitting the accelerator.
Depending on how many km's your car has done, it may be a good chance to do a few more things at the same time as doing your valve stem seals.
Out of curosity, how many km's has your engine done & what were you planning on replacing your engine with? & Was there any other reasons you wanted to change your engine? (Unless your after more power of course)
Anyway, I'm sure Mal will be happy to add his 2 cents at some stage.

Yes my 2c worth...
It is certainly possable and not too hard to do this with head on.
On the 4 it is an easy job, with the 6 it is a bit more tricky as the rear bank is furthur back lol
There are special tools needed as Lethal saw when I did his, if it is super high milage though probably not really worth it.

yeh brand new
thought it wasnt bad
we looked into reco they are 2700
so mite aswell go brand new for the xtra 300
wot else would/could i put in to replace it with
could also talk to killbilly about what he did and whether that is an option... easy 220hp if you can get your hands on the engine.
