just wondering if anyone has or knows of any places that tint tail lights with a film rather than the spray stuff
i know its done in the US and I've found websites where you can buy the film but I'm not good at applying stuff like that
any ideas?

sounds dodgy, the proper way, is to spray the outside with a thin layer of black and then spray a clear coat on top.

I think spraying your lights with paint sounds dodgier then putting a film on them:P

i think they mix a small amount of tint with the clear coat and spray that
i just think the sticker sounds better because it can always be removed
im pretty sure having tinted tail lights is illegal either way...but people still do it.

do a search. I've gone through this all before.
tinted tail lights aren't illegal so long as they still meet the required ADRs (which have to do with light output at a certain wattage).
of course, if you get pulled over you'll probably get defected for it. so long as it passes the tests at the RTA or whatever your state has, they'll be fine.
what I've done is purchased a set of tinted tail lights (Grant Walker Parts), and kept my stock ones in case of problems.
cheers,

yeh thats what i was planning on doing but the two piece verada tailights are harder to come by, thats why the film seems more appropriate
idk just a thought

Night shade is $18 a can at Autobarn, the guy there said straight off the shelf it's illegal.
No matter how dark or whatever he said it was illegal...
I was interested in spraying my rear lights (Black car + tinted lights = hotness) but when he said all that it has kind of deterred me from going through with it..

The proper way is indeed to mix a tinting agent with clear coat and spray that onto the lights, that maintains the gloss, looks much better. My understanding is as long as the reflectors are red and the lights are clearly visible when on (tails etc) during the day, they're fine.

Or, you can just clear them over the top for gloss as well.
But use acrylic clear as nightshades is acrylic too, Btw taillights look fantastic!

And yeah says on the can itself only for off-road use..
But really with the amount of ****boxes on the road today that are highly illegal in so many ways, some tint on the back of your tails is the least of a cops worry, unless you get pulled over for a roadworthy thing they do :P

My thought with this sort of stuff is always insurance. I would love to tint mine a little but the illegality and insurance issue put me off it.

Exactly, it's the rear-ending factor that puts me off, since you have no control over that and you could very well end up getting blamed.

Insurance company's will use anything to not pay up, if your rear ended and you've got some form of tint on your tails you can bet your life they'll use that against you.
SupremeMoFo's tail lights are fine, they're built to achieve the regulations.
Perry, you need to do your high mount, sticks out like a sore thumb!

here we go again...
I have the same tail lights as SupremeMoFo. they are stamped with all the E markings that correspond to the regulations that the ADRs are based on. I have had them inspected at the ACT RTA, and the inspectors were happy that they passed all the tests to be legal.
so, in summary, buy the E marked tinted tail lights, don't tint your own. I think they're about $200.
here's the thread (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46310) with all the markings and what they mean!

Would be their fault for not leaving sufficient braking space in between cars.
']Would be their fault for not leaving sufficient braking space in between cars.
Unfortunately if your car is defective in an area that contributed to the collision then your put at fault. If you tint your lights and as a result the light output is too low, your not properly alerting vehicles behind of deceleration, which puts you at fault. Might sound wrong but that's how it works, this is why brake lights are a roadworthy items.

Ive seen taillights with 4 coatings on them and I can still see the brake lights properly....
So if your tailgating the person, you will be at fault as you should be a minimum distance behind the person in front at all times weather you car has tinted taillights or weather its on 3 wheels and has a cow tied to the roof.
It takes some SERIOUS tinting to block out a light source usually no longer then an inch or two away from the lens itself

You can argue the point all you like, but the fact of the matter is if they can find anything on your car defectable that contributed to the collision (eg. Tint on your lights), they'll wack you with the blame, thats just how it works. If they can't defect you on it, then your fine, but if they can, good luck getting out of it.
Take the recent 3 car accident our Camry was in for example, you'd think given the lady who rear ended the car behind us simply didn't stop in time its her fault right? Not the case, construction work shouldn't have been on at that time, they contributed and cause the incident, so it became their fault.
Same deal with tinting, if it contributed to the accident, its your fault. Much like if you cut someone off and they rear end you, just because they hit your ass doesn't mean they get the blame.
So its not rocket science, if you don't want to have the problem don't fit anything to your car that makes it defectable, keep it legal and you've nothing to worry about.

Don't be retarded. A 'coating' is subjective, you can have a light coat, or you can have a heavy coat. You don't have to be tailgating the person either, imagine if there was a black car with tinted lights parked on the road, and you ran up the back of it. YOU would be ****ty because YOU couldn't see the reflectors on the back because of the tinted tail lights. Anything that makes the ADR compliancy redundant IS illegal.

I've decided to Nite Shade them but only a few real light coats
anyway there was a thread i viewed a while back which told you how to use Nite Shade the proper way with the sanding in between coats of the nite shade and clear coat
does anyone know of this thread and/or what sandpaper etc to use as I've searched and searched through threads and I cant find it

From memory, and if I were to do it without checking I would do 2 light coats and 1 heavier coat of tint, then without sanding the actual tint I would smash it with 5 or 6 coats of clear then sand it with 2000 grade sandpaper then give them a polish.
Personally I am going for the $100 set off eBay first because I'm a ***** and would probably neck myself if my insurance got reversed.denied due to the tinting.

You should, Because not everybody is that smart, but when they are smart, you will be the one to pay the price. I am saying this because people are normally recovering from shock when they hit. All it takes is your tail lights to fail, even one of the brake lights is enough.
It will be an arguement in court whther is an approved mod, and you need people to analyse it.
With all many have spare tail lights incase they get done.
