View Full Version : Tyre wear problem on my 380.

Hey all its been a while since Ive posted anything on AMC but I have a query to put to those who own a 380.
I have 18 x 8 in mags on the car and have had since we got the car, and the family and I have just arrived home from a trip to Victoria. In Lismore we got a flat back tyre and had to change it and when we pulled it off we noticed that the inside was scrubbed considerably. This occurred on the passenger side and the drivers side was 'scalloping' (which is wearing in a lumpy pattern). And yes I do realise that I am responsible for this as the owner of the vehicle and have been slack in my personal responsibility.

Now just before leaving I put the car in for the 30,000 k service and they never said that anything was wrong with the tyres although the box in the service book marked "checked the tyres for wear and pressure" was ticked off. We did tell them that we were traveling interstate and wanted the car in tip top shape and we got new fan belts and a battery put in. I just dont understand why they wouldn't tell me that the tyres were scrubbed badly at that point??? Does anyone think I should complain about that or just write it off?

Back to the point of the matter and that is I want to know if anyone else has this issue with either standard or after market wheels on their car. Oh yes and it had just had a wheel alignment done not a month prior and they told me that the wheels alignment was fine and he never mentioned the condition of the tyres either.

Why I want to know is that I need to know if this is going to be an ongoing issue or one that I can have fixed - if it is something that the 380's do, I can deal with it and just wont put on expensive tyres. It is going back for another wheel alignment check next week.

.... & this is on the rear? I don't have a problem with mine running 19's & lowered. The only adjustment on the rear of a 380 is the camber which could wear the inside of the tyre but being standard height (by your profile) I wouldn't think that would be a problem.

ok, I know I don't own a 380, but I've had scalloping or cupping issues with tyres before (aftermarket 15s on my 1998 Civic). mostly it's due to the tyres not being rotated or a regular basis, which leads to uneven wear and, in the worst instance, significant tyre noise at highway speeds.

the typical mechanic would just check for tread depth and pressure and most likely not even notice that the tyres are significantly cupped out.

if the uneven wear was noticeable, I would at least let the place that serviced your car know that they missed a fairly significant tyre wear issue, especially as you mentioned your interstate trip to them.

an alignment will help, but not as much as rotating your tyres every 5k km.

cheers,
.wook

The only issue I had with mine was a misalignment causing premature wear on the outer rims of the front tires (or should I say tyres?). And this was after 1500 km  - I had the guy change the wheels around (front to back, back to front).

In a separate issue I put it in for servicing, letting them know of my intentions to drive interstate. They said no probs, we'd rotate and align them for you. After I get back from the trip I wash my car and realize that the silly buggers aligned the wheels but forgot to rotate them! I know because I got the receipt from the alignment company showing the changes they did, and I know where my wheels have scratches on the side walls (none of these changed). In addition to this the prematurely worn tyres from before was still on the rear. Looks like I'm not alone in the negligent tyre care experience!

Yeah, I was advised to rotate my tyres (19s, lowered) every 5,000 in order to get the best life span out of them. So far I've only been through about 1,500km and all is fine.

Everyones missing the point, he said on the rear?? .... not front

I was just concurring with Wookie on 5,000km rotations (to swap fronts and rears)... but as for rears wearing abnormally, I've not experienced that with my 19s or previous 16s. It sounds like either an overdue alignment, or wrong tyre pressure combined with overdue rotation.

okay I am a she not a he :bowrofl:

But yeah this is an issue that is only occurring on the rear of the car. I dont quite get why. But if no one else is having the issue then maybe it is something that can be fixed, rather than it being an issue like the commodores (which is what i was afraid of).

TMR have a helical LSD sitting there from the TMR380 prototype that would go nicely in your manual!!

My dual exhaust may be up for grabs soon, if I do the supercharger gonna go 3" with twin 2.5's :D

Wow you got a manual. Nice. Getting off topic, but what mods have you made? As for exhausts, many here have done that and its one of the cheapest/gainiest mods you can make to a 380. Either go with the rear muffler like I did, or go the whole extractor system like Mr Foozrcool has done (not quite as cheap but more gainy).

I'm in Brissy & open to offers if I go ahead with the SC. Will also have a left over Unichip Q if you really wanna get that 380 going

yeah wanted a manual but it isnt as economical as the autos which is unfortunate but i still love it. i preferred the manual and it was hard to get hold of but persistence paid off. got a few bonus' when i took delivery of it, like a sunroof and tcl for free. so that was nice.

no mods as of yet. cept the wheels and the spoiler. thats it.

Nothing wrong with a manual. I have noticed my economy worsens when I use manual mode... but its so much better than auto mode!
I would definately recommend the simpler mods, as in rear muffler change-over, Galant intake, & K&N filter. Those mods will only cost a couple of hundred and will ready start your 380 going. That's all I've done, and plan to do for the time-being - but the more serious mods would be nice too.

So what part of (obviously further north than Brissy) QLD you from? I was down the coast for a few days last weekend, very relaxing ......

How long you had your 380? I would have to say this is the best car I've owned, love it! ... & with the mods is real nice to drive

yeah i dont really want to pour too much money into it as Im not sure how long i will have the car, i would like to keep it past the 5 year mark but the other half isnt too keen, specially now theyve stopped making them.

but def looking at the more basic mods - but hell she pulls up to a buck 40 no worries when overtaking and ****, def got some stick.

Hey Grubco, checked your profile. I'd say when you get rid of that baby seat it'll be time for more mods, don't wanna snap the little ones neck lol

I know RPW seems to be a bad word on here but I spoke to them about a LSD & they said they do a gear swap in the 380 manuals & pick up about 500 revs in most gears, big diff apparantly

Itsubish

yeah i noticed when i drove a auto hire car for work once that in overdrive on the highway it sits on like 2200 rpm, where as mine sits at about 2500 rpm at 100kph. and 2800 rpm at 110. its a bit sucky, but i will say i was impressed that on our trip away the fuel consumption ranged from 9.9 to 10.2 which was great for my car.

Yeah the way I figure, its always a good time for more mods... unfortunately the other half doesn't quite share that sentiment...
I was very impressed, though, with the supercharger thread and the cost of the whole thing. Very very tempting. Perhaps when the mortgage is gone...

Yeah that is a pretty cool price, I was thinking 7-8K. I think I will end up doing it, just have a few things to sort with my CEL & CAI first. You need to get some extractors & a chip, massive improvement although BloodAsp so far hasn't achieved it for some reason

Maybe with TMR having a fiddle with the blower they can get rid of the CEL or might have a solution to the issue?

back on topic...

the rear toe may be out enough to start wearing the inside corner of the tyres. once a tyre starts wearing unevenly it is very hard to stop it. if the tyres are rotated regularly it can help extend the life even if there are alignment problems.

anyway, enough spam.
