View Full Version : Installing a HU in the back?
If I was to do this, would it be possible to fit a HU in to the rear of the centre console or something?
I have a crazy idea:
1. Install a 17" overhead screen
2. Wire the screen to a DVD HU
3. Instead of speaker output, wire the audio out to headphone connecters in the left and right on the rear shelf
4. As a secondary interface for the 17" have it connected to the centre-stage head unit.
This setup should cost somewhere around ~$500 once I have my 7" and DVD HU up front so its a fairly cheap mod AV wise.

How would you control the HU?

Is the idea to entertain the rear passengers you rarely have?
Hence it being in the back not mattering.

Thats the idea :) I think it would be a good secondary system for the price.
And it would be controled by rear passengers - No fighting with me :)
As for the original question - Possible to fit a head unit in the rear somehow?

Pfft... the rear passengers are only either tight****s, drunk, or can't drive, why are you wasting half a grand on trying to entertain them? And how often do you take passengers on trips long enough to even warrant using the screen and headphones? And having a 17" screen blocking your rear vision mirror will be a pain in the ****. List goes on.
Cool idea... for a show car maybe
Oh, as to answer your question, yep I reckon it'd be possible there might JUST be space under the centre console storage box. Otherwise, just modify the storage box. Power cabling will be a cinch, video leads probably will too if you're gonna put a screen in the roof anyway. There's 2 large bolts (which I used for an earthing point for each of my 2 under-seat amps) under the storage box in the centre console. Just pull that box out, have a look in there, see what you think.
You'll probably want to wire it in with the accessories circuit so it's only available when the car's on.
... Maybe its just me dreaming of having enough money to make a show car :(

Maybe. The best show cars have 5 or 6 figures ploughed into them though. I'm younger than you and depending on your circumstances you're probably doing pretty well to run a large V6 powered car anyway.
Well TBH I don't drive much anymore, thats why I have the money to take 1000km cruises, visit all the cruises, mod the **** out of my car and not have to worry about the price of petrol.
I live literally 15 minutes walk from work.
OH, and I'm a Linux Systems Admin... Decent job for my age I guess :)

points for thinking outside the square, but yeah it could be 500 bucks better spent on other mods though imho, 500 gets you flipdown with a built in wireless headphones and Dvd player (fleabay). Or gets you halfway to purchasing an Raptor Manifold, or halfway towards a set of cams.
But yeah points for thinking outside the square.

I say we turn this into a poll for him...
How to spend his $500!!!!
I would bite the bullet... save another few hundred and get the Ezi Boys Manifold!
Best Bang for Buck i reckon.
Unless you got kids, who cares about rear passengers! hahalol

Life, paint your front bar and get parras man.
Who cares about your passengers, its your car, if they don't appreciate being driven around and don't like your music, tell them to BYO iPod lol
Front bar is next on the list (Only a respray unless I can get a JVM bar for under 500), however since I went and bought the 7" flipout already I'll get my DVD setup up front first.
Now as for paras, I can't justify any more then $250 for them.
Next up, engine mods... Red P's in NSW, if I get busted with them I can't drive my car until I remove them... and with the way I drive I prob would get busted.

3 pairs of parras on eBay that can be had for around the $250 mark atm. Hit them up! Also hit up the VRX kit guy and get a VRX bar pretty sure they can be had for well under $500.

Giggle giggle giggle, unless you go around advertising that you are packing heat under the bonnet chances are you wont get defected, hooning, speeding, and being a general idiot gets attention to this sort of stuff. Also if a cop (apart from Steve :D ) can tell the difference between Ez's Manifold and a standard one he is doing rather well. Just dont go sticking 500 pods under the bonnet and your safe.

I hear you can put like 600 pods in there in some western parts of sydney and it's OK if you keep your drifting whilst the pods are installed, one you're driving normally then you're in trouble.
Maybe this is the go Life?
Haha, I can't anyways. Gf's dad is a cop and pretty knowledgable with illegal mods. He reguarly sees under my bonnet. All I could really do is internals (pistons, cams etc...).
