Just checked the ignition timing on the TS V6.
It was at 20 degrees BTDC !
Readjusted it to 5 degrees with the timing cut shorted out and it went to 15 degrees with the short removed, so all is well.
Car now has more torque down low and idles smoother.
QUESTION: this is a new car for me (10 months). Can long term owners of the 3L V6 confirm for me that the timing doesn't wander all that much during ownership, and that 5 degrees too advanced is due to neglect or poor servicing by previous owner? Or do I have to check it often? What does the manual say re interval for checking the timing on the V6?

mine went out 2 degrees (13BTDC) after 18months. As it got closer to belt servicing i assume was the culprit

Does the distributor run off the rear cam? If the belt stretches, would that advance or retard the ignition timing?

Yeah it does run off the rear cam, Not too sure how much a belt like this stretch's though. Mal or Buffy would be better fielding that

As the belt stretches, it would retard both the cam timing and distributor timing. I wouldn't expect the belt to stretch much, if at all, during its lifetime. I'm just trying to work out why it was set at 20 degrees. This is my second magna, and guess what? The other one had the same problem - 2.6 though.
