View Full Version : Another failed roof lining - can you just glue it back up?

The rooflining is just fabric glued to cardboard, right? Can you just use a syringe to put spots of glue between the fabric and cardboard backing which I assume is there around the place and smooth it back over?

If that would be epic fail, spose I'd better grab a replacement kit from the clearance warehouse.

Once it falls off, thats it i think, as it has overstretched? also its not cardboard its fibreglass as well. Just get a spare one from the clearance house/wreckers/steal one. They are a half hour job to replace.

EDIT: you could also staple it up :P mates have done it in there bogandores

Will be speaking from 2nd Gen experience here but its fabric glued to cardboard.
Cheapest and quickest option is to use spray adhesive, let dry to a tackyness then stick back on, if its falling from the edge its the easiest thing to do, if its falling from the middle, grab one from the wreckers, cover it in fur, all done!

Remove the card from the car, throw away the old liner and glue on new fabric of your choice. Clean off the foam first. Wagon comes straight out the back, sedan out the left front door. Contact adhesive works fine, use it wet but not too much as it may seep through. Recut holes and install. Done this 4 times now on sigmas and magnas - none have fallen down yet.

Spotlight? Yep, there's where I buy mine LOL
Pinup board material in a colour that matches the original looks best.
Wire brush and 1 L of contact adhesive, a spreader and you are all set. I've used "liquid nails" on my last one ( a station wagon)- works well, but you need 2 tubes.

madmax = good advice! mine fell down in my 2nd gen first tried with stapels and glues and liquid nails and other horrible things but we ended up doing it in my mate's commodore by getting it out getting rid of the foam between the material and backboard and using spray on adhesive. worked great and never came back down. just dont do what curtois did which is take it all off and spray the backboard black... looks like the car was on fire! oh and + 1 for tuffTR's fur!!!

The roof lining fell down in parts on my brother's second gen and I found no way to neatly reglue the original lining. So I ripped it off and put some thicker material on so that the glue wouldn't seep through and it looks great.

we charge it out at 180+gst.
but we sublet to another company to do it - which means it prolly costs US about... 140ish or so.

My mum got a new roof lining installed into her 98 Camry a month or so ago for $170. Worst roof lining ever in that thing and such a mess, I couldn't get it off the roof and that orangey foam stuff flaked off everywhere so no way to glue new material onto it. Magna is much better design.

Is there anything better than spray adhesive? It has just never worked for me.

Just about to have a crack at doing it on ours. Did it in our last car, a Pulsar. Bought spray adhesive from Bunnings and material from a curtain store. The material was a bit thicker so if the glue soaked through you would not see it. I know who owns the car and it's still schmick 8 years on.

I just bought a replacement for $15 or $20 or whatever it was from the Mitsu Clearance warehouse before I left Adelaide. Easy to replace.

Some spray adhesive brands tend to be better than others.... .I'm going to do mine soon. I am thinking of using a nice thick vinyl and real contact adhesive (the stuff you get in a tin) that should work fine.

Try the spray adhesives from 3M.
They are great.

Anyone got any pictures of their re done roof linings?

Would I dare go another colour?

theres white.

that is very thin material (polar fleece), no seepage at all. bostik contact adhesive sprayed on.

if you dont have access to a compressor and spray gun, i really recommend getting 3M's spray adhesive above brushing on contact, but if need be, contact will still work fine. Did an on site job where I had to brush on contact for a utes roof, but given that i was using suede, there was no risk of seeping so it was all good.

worst bit of the entire job is getting the old foam off the lining. this took probably 2 hours

I got quoted $140 inc GST from my local motor trimmer if I pull the headlining out myself and drop it off.

I've done it myself on three of my cars in the past, but I just CBFed this time... Not for less than $200.
