View Full Version : Installing Traction Control

Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fit Traction Control to a TL ES that did not come with it from the factory? If yes, what is involved and is it worthwhile.

Thanks

Wow what a job.... not worth the effort..

First question is: Why bother? you shouldnt need it unless you are packing heat under the bonnet. And yeah the sheer amount of work to transplant it would be crazy

Ok. If it was straightforward and reasonably priced I would do it, as it can be turned off if not in use. At the end of the day, it is a safety feature that may come in handy.

requires... new hubs, speed sensor for each wheel. new ecu. new TB, wiring loom throught whole car. theres more too....

Not worthwhile... if you're worried about traction you're better off with a Quaife LSD surely.

Change drivers?

Ok Thank you for your help. I will look into the quaife LSD.

isn't that LSD for a manual??

and you got a auto??

works with auto aswell

spending 1400+ installation into an auto box is a plain stupid idea, better off going a manual if you are spending that much.

Or sell the FWD and get an AWD if traction is that big a concern.

It requires a simple kit and 1 extra sensor which is EASILLY fitted.

You can get kits which use your speedo sensor as the front wheel speed, and then attach a sensor identical to a cruise control sensor to the rear hubs which gives you rear speed.

The kit/unit then simply cuts spark or fuel durring any period the fronts travel faster than the rears by a scalable amount.

Search around, I know a few ECU's do it but you can get kits which intercept the ECU's coil wire for a rotational idle, like the EVO's.

Now you tell me, after I went out and bought all those parts. lol

ABS is actually quite easy if you have a wreck with all the gear.

Sadly Mitsubishi do not use one wiring loom as Mazda and some others do thus if you want to add on an option you need to work hard for it.

I am adding elec windows and cruise to my TF, have obtained the entire internal harness. The engine bay harness are all the same, from there back is where they change. Was going to add SRS as well but to be honest do not think much of doggy bags

Going to give this a :bump:

How hard is it to install the factory tcl into a manual TJS2? Worth the effort? I do often see TJS2/KJS2 car's at the wreckers so if it isn't too complex I could rip out and install the new parts ....

Has anyone installed those traction control kits Roy was talking about above?

TCL would be a nice addition in the wet and/or when I'm on steep hills. Despite having decentish rubber I'm still getting a bit of wheelspin....

What tyres do you have?

Have done this a couple of times, you will need quite a lot of work to do this, depending on what harness you are running you may get away without that but you will need the engine harness, either a 4sp auto ECU with TCL or a 5sp Auto ECU with TCL, steering position sensor, TCL control unit, upper dash harness (unless is a verada one as well) cluster surround, lights for the cluster and if older style cluster you will need to change your cluster. Is a lot of work for not that much gain.

The best TCL is your right foot

Currently got Kumho Ku31's in 235/40/R18 size. Had great grip with the 4sp auto but now the 5 manual is causing a bit more spin than I'd like. The tyres do have about 25,000km wear on them so I suspect that may also be apart of the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Would the TJS2 exec engine harness have the wiring for TCL in it? I do currently do have the Verada Ei dash loom in the car but replacing the ecu concerns me as I'm under the impression I need a new bem & keypack as well. None of the wrecks I can get access to have keys in them so that would be an extra cost ontop. However I can get access to a few magna advance models which to my understanding had traction control (tcl) so I could get the tcl unit, engine harness and ecu.
Is the steering sensor behind the steering wheel? I'm guessing the clock spring from the cruise would not be adequate?

I wouldn't have mind having tcl for steep hill starts and in the wet. Also would help a bit with launches as well.

Magna Advance does not have TCL.

Magna LS (TL range) does.

Also, the TCL ECU (Which lives down near the ECU) is specific to the series KH/J and you will need to match it to ecu you have. So, if you have the ECU from a KJ, then you will need a KJ TCL computer.

I had to replace the TCL ECU when I replaced the engine ECU for tiptronic. The wiring is a little different in each, but the KJ TCL ECU requires less wires than the KH one, so mine was plug and play upgrade.
