today i did my regular 5000km oil change

i drained the oil, removed oil filter, replaced with new oil filter, filled up to required level with penrite 5W40, sounds pretty standard right!

i then started the car and went to reverse out, noticing roughly 4.2litres of oil on my driveway. so i started checking things. sump plug, check. oil filter tight, check. problem for MAD35L.

i rang my mechanic mate and he suggested that i check the oil filter, apparently ryco oil filters sometimes leave the O ring up there. BINGO

ryco cost me 5 litres of the good stuff and a new oil filter, an hour or f*** around driving to SCA (very lucky i have a 2nd car), not to mention a big fu**ing mess!

has this happened to anyone else or am i total moron?

Nah .............. just you lol

I always make a point of cleaning the face of the oil filter seat on the engine and putting a little oil on the filter rubber of the newy.

That way you spot those problems.

Chalk that one up to experience, Ive only seen it once before. :D

why exactly did it cost you a new filter??

all you had to do was pull the old 'O'ring off and replace the filter that you had just purchased.

and no you are not a total moron, just not as attentive as some mechanics...

well i kinda did some damage to the old filter whilst removing it. it was really hard to remove and i dont have a shed full of tools. and seeing as im super fussy i just replaced it. id rather be safe than sorry.

I'm sorry but i can't possibly see how you could have damaged it, they are only supposed to be put on hand tight.

well it got covered in oil, i could grip it so i had to get it off with multigrips

it wasnt very damaged, but even a little damage is too much for me

I destroy filters if I don't have the tools, who cares it's an old filter?

Very good bit of advice - always lube ya rubbers.

I sell seals and o-rings every single day and it's just such a common problem for people to dry fit rubber seals. They tighten up the housing and the rubber catches and tears.

this happened to me the 1st time i did a service to my car... reason why it happened to me was coz the previous owner had the filter on WAY too tight, took me 10 mins to get it off with my bare hands

sounds about right. and i made the mistake of putting the new filter on with the old ring still in there, i put it on as tight as i could with my hand like i always do, but having the second ring in there seemed to make it too tight to get off.

put it down to trial and error these things happen and we only learn from our mistakes, i had never heard of that being a problem b4 the seals have always come off with the old filter for me just ****s me when ppl do the filters up too tight, its hand tight +/- 1/4 turn extra (off memory) jeez!

Sorry to say it mate, you cost yourself 5l of HPR15 not ryco,

You ALWAYS need to check the "O" ring no matter what filter you use, I am more concerned however that you did not clean the surface where the filter mates up to becuase if you did it would have been obvious :)

+1

Its weird that it didnt come with an O-ring, first one ive seen one come without them. I can ring Ryco on Tuesday if you wish to see if you have a valid claim but 99.8% sure they will say no bingo.

all oil filters come with O ring, However when you take an old filter off and the O ring sticks then it will more than likely cause the new filter and O ring to leak as when you screw it on it will move to the side and cause it not to seal.

I think the thread has run its course and needs to b closed.

why are you using a Ryco oil filter to start with?
do you want the car to die?

i refuse to use Ryco filters - (IMO of course) they are cheap and nasty and dont offer much in the way of protection for the engine.

my oil filter story - got the ex to change the oil on my car for me - drove around Gold coast for a couple of months, then up here to mackay - got dad to change the oil for me and oh look - its not actually on tight enough - it unspun quite easily.
for the record, i know how to change my own oils and filters - its easy do do, but i cant climb around under or over engines and cars anymore coz of my back (which sucks) so i have to rely on people to do it free for me, or pay mitsu/mechanic to do it....

i always put a lil oil on the o ring - just a smear and it helps too when it comes time to take it off again in 5000km's time!

Bahaha, heres a trade secret, Ryco, Cooper, Valvoline and Burson OEM filters are ALL made out of the same factory, and are all owned by GUD filtration. Same insides, same filter medium, same valving, same everything. Just different names stamped on the cover.

Also ive got customers who have used rycos for 15 odd years in the same car (landcruiser) done 4 trips around Aus and is still running sweet as a nut.

Its something you should always check regardless of the oil filter brand.

That said I forgot to do it with my most recent oil service. Not leaking though :)

Ok, most filters are made in the same factory and just painted different colours

The Mits filters are made in the factory in Indo that make AC Delco (holden), FSA, Shakara (plain brand one I use on all my cars as are a quater of the price), fram etc etc

Ryco are made in the same factory that make Cooper and a few others as well.

In general these days all of the filters are the same and have the same core, the important thing is that the bypass valve is a ball and spring and not the older plastic plug that pops out and does not re seal once the over pressureisation has run its course.

Now the thread has run its course, as usual people can not respect other opinions and have to act like tools and abuse each other
