Hey guys.

I have picked up some maroon vinyl seats, although i would prefer black. i have the option of retrimming which i cant afford, or the option of dying the seats. i notice a fair few people dying there steering wheels, how do you guys go with cracking and fading?

and as a side question, anyone in perth know of any places that dyes?

thanks mike

just go to somewhere like spotlight and buy the fabric dyes - its prolly more expensive to buy it from spotlight than anywhere else but its one place i can think of atm.

anyhow - just soak the seat covers in the dye with water etc, and it will soak into the fabric and change the colour.
as for fading / cracking - it shouldnt crack, fading im not so sure about.

iv never used it sorry, so im not 100% sure on it.
it should be quite good - will need to be soaked in a strong dye for serveral hours to make sure its evenly soaking in and all uniform colour etc.
never heard a bad report about it - people use it to change t shirt colours all the time, and it doesnt fade out too badly with frequent washing - so shouldnt fade / wash out at all when you think that you rarely if ever put your seats through the washing machine! lol

Personally if i was going down this route, id look at getting them done professionally, as with some dyes they may look good in the beginning but with high use areas (drivers seats, steering wheels) they may fade, wear though or similar. Go down to a local household lounge suite maker/fabricator and see what they think.

I know he also said dye, but ive had it happen on an old couch we dyed because it was fading.

yeh it works and looks well

but for car seats i would personally get it done professionally
just for piece of mind and the fact that you know it will last and is done properly

Heh yeah, but i think even the "bankroll" has there work cutout for the next installment for the neverending quest of the term "POWAR!"

I cant see it costing more then 300-400 myself to have it done properly, as it would be a fair amount of dye being used, and they would probably soak it in the dye

hey guys,

i have spoken to a few paint shops, as i wanted to see if i could get the dye in a one litre tin. they all informed me that vynil is sealed and yu need to get a special etching primer as well as the dye to seal it. has anyone else herd this?

havent heard of that
but that VHT dye paint is for vinyl too so i cant see why you cant just dye it, as it says it works for both vinyl and leather

I'd be inclined to go ask a leather trimmer or something
they probably know best

Ive have been in contact with a leather product company called Fiebings, and they advise against tryin to dye leather yourself as its very hard to do so definately a pro job for anyone looking into this
