Hi,

I have read the sticky about cleaning your throttle body. I have 2 spare ones, so I pulled one off a manifold and decided to give it a go. My first problem I encountered was the 2 hoses that connect to your throttle body. I ended up cutting them off my manifold to get the TB off. Once on the bench I had a fair hard time getting them off. Once removed, I found ALOT of corrosion on both of them.

Is this fairly common?

Aside from that, what are these 2 hoses for? (just for general knowledge)

My 2nd problem encountered was the actual TB, I got in there, cleaned it up, but found that the flap was quiet tacky/sticky when in its closed position, had to put a bit of effort into getting it to open, but once open it was smooth.

Is this fairly common also?

My 3rd question/problem was the 2 ECU plugs on the TB. I assume the one connected to the flapper is your TPS. What is the 2nd? It looks like a temperature sensor. I took both of these off the TB and found a lot of crap built up in both of them, more so in this temp plug?

So after cleaning everything I put it back together and will take off my 2nd spare TB and give that one ago soon enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ben

Ben

Can't remember about the plugs you're right about the TPS someone will remember the other one if it isn't cruise related or something.

The corroded plugs are normal and they're there for the cold start system, coolant is run through the t/b where a wax pellet melts blocking off a bypass around the butterfly. Raises the idle initially till its melted to help the car warm up quicker. I've bypassed this system.

I've bypassed this system.

Care to explain? How?

I probably should/could do the same as I am running an aftermarket ECU, same as you yeah? E6X? with premapped cold start and blah....??

The "flapper" as youi put it is your TPS

The other one, square plug, is the idle control stepper, it is suuposed to control your idle and compensate for air con etc. This will usually get quite gunked up.

The 2 pipes, some will tell you to disconnect them but for a normal street engine leave them alone and connect them. These have coolant flow through them, there is a wax pellet for your fast idle and as it heats up your idle drops for normal running. And no the wax does not melt to block off as such, as it heats up (yes it does melt) it more importantly expands which in turn moves a small piston up onto a plate that then slows down the engine.

Also, always replace the control valve gasket and ISC "O" ring. The control valve is the part that the coolnat flows through.

Sweet as. Well I dont run a stock engine, and my cold start is apart of my ECU. So If I was to block this cold start off, I would just need to find 4 blanking plugs and block off each end?

take one of the cooland lines and plumb it back into the system where the other hose comes out, that way you will have flow though it and not worrying about having to block of lines etc.

I would just like to thank Mal for his write up on cleaning the throttle body, im a complete noob and doing anything engine wise and am normally too scared to touch anything for fear of breaking something, but today i got into it and pulled off my throttle body, and cleaned the rocker cover breather hoses too with the help of his write-up, big thanks Mal:D

My god they were blocked, so much thick sludge in them, the hoses were originals and split when i tried to put them back on so i had to go buy some hose and replace them, throttle response is so much better now, no lag when putting the foot down, feels much nicer to drive. I still have the problem with almost stalling when braking on hot days with the AC on as i tried to make it happen and i could make it happen, need a new ISC i think then it should be happy sailing i hope.

Will let you know how I go tomorow, will probably have a go at swapping my TB tomorow... after I fix my inlet gasket...and set my timing up....

I also have a write up with pics on my old Magna site,
