Ok so I have a 12" 400watt pioneer sub I've looked online and get different answers to the question of what size amp should I put to this
I've read 400watt or overpowering it with 800-1200 so I have no idea any help would be good
im also thinking about Focal Access1 Splits
165 A1
6.5" component speaker set
Max. power handling: 120W.
Nominal power handling: 60W RMS.
Frequency response:60Hz-20kHz.
for the front it would be great to be able to have 1 amp do both please any info would be great thanks.
oh and brand isnt an issue with me price lets say up to $1500

Ok this is based on assuming the 400W is RMS not PMPO. With amps its always good to have a bit of extra power or 'headroom'. So say the sub is drawing 250W having extra power in reserve is good as it means the amp isn't running flat out and at higher temperatures all the time. Amp lasts longer :) Bit like a standard guy and a muscle man bench pressing 50kg. Both can do it but the muscle man doesn't need to strain as much. 800-1200 is probably overkill. If you do use a higher output amp you simply turn the gains down to suit the sub. 400-600W will be perfectly ok.
To set this up, get a CD that has a bit of bass that you like listening to loud. Turn the gains right down on your amp. Turn the cd player up full blast. Then turn the gains up on your amp till just before the sub distorts. This way you know that you can turn your deck up full and not blow your sub.

A standard 2 channel amp would be fine here. I am assuming by saying you want an amp to do both you mean both front speakers, and you want a separate amp to do your sub.
$1500 is overkill on an amp for what you are looking at. You will have heaps of options for 2 channel amps (80-100W) under $700. Heck even under $500 would get you something fine.
Hope that helps, let me know if you aren't sure about anything else.
Cheers
Pete :)
If its 400wrms, up to 500wrms is about right.
Is the Sub a Dual Voice Coil? As in dual 4ohm? If so, you can then wire it to run at 2Ohm.
Sony XM1S would do the job nicely ($300-$400) Class D amp, runs cool and in poor ventilation.
Also - I have a correction to make on Poita's post.
Your volume should be set at 3/4 of your max volume (i.e. 45 if you can go up to 60 on a headunit). Your headunit will distort the signal above 3/4 (well most.....possibly excluding high end units).
This should be your new 'max volume'.
For your front - buy an amp with a bit of room to spare, incase you upgrade later on.
Something like:
Boston GT22 100wrms x 2 $569 AUD
Rockford P5002 100oddrms x 2 $499
Vibe Slick A2 2 x 100wrms $369AUD
Vibe BlackBox Stereo 2, 2 x 110wrms $569AUD

I see a budget of $1500 and one amp I think Audison LRx 3.1k
With 160WRMS on offer for the splits and 750-1000WRMS for a sub, its the amp you will never need to upgrade even if you add extra woofers.
Otherwise for your current set up the Vibe Slick A4 is great, 150WRMS for the fronts and 500WRMS bridged 4ohm for the sub for under $600 or DD C4a... plus many more.
You wanted an amp to do both the front and the sub?
If so - sorry, should have read your post properly
Basically - what Charmisma said lol

plenty of options for that sort of cash..
you are better off going for a 4ch and a mono. it just depends on what you want to do. even a 2ch will suffice for the fronts, its just if you ever want to run active or a 3 way setup you wont have to purchase another amp.
around 600-700WRMS would do well for the sub in case you ever want to upgrade, just turn the gains down and you are set

honestly i wouldnt even bother amping the focal access series...
save the 1500 for some decent splits and then a good amp for them

Soundstream TRC.6N's would be my pick - but im biased lol
Though they definately need a fair bit of power up their ass or they lack bottom end.
