You'll have to take the rear bumper off (mudguards off, bolts out along each side inside and rear of boot, large bolts in chassis rails - two of which are on top of the muffler, which needs loosening by slipping off the rearmost muffler rubber mount).

If you have a genuine wiring kit plug fit in to the passenger side rear light plug (it piggybacks) and run it through rubber gland.

An aftermarket wiring kit will require identifying and tapping into individual wires.

Fit towbar (to holes left by removed chassis rail bumper bolts). Don't fit tongue yet.

Cable tie wiring loom to tow bar

Install bumper (remember to remove towbar insert plug).

Install tow bar tongue.

Install muffler mount rubber.

Fit trailer electrical socket (and check the wiring)!

PS Yes I've done it with a sedan and it took about 3 hours, but a genuine wiring kit was already fitted. Had the car on the ground for the job.

Sounds about what I did to fit mine the other weekend. But mine is a TJ (surely it's the same), and I was using the mitsi factory stealth kit. I managed to get it in without taking off the back bumper. Instructions said just undo the bottom bumper support plastic lugs, and bend the metal support bracket out the way. However, it was a massive pain in the **** on my own to get the thing in there. Took me about 4 hours although, it didn't help that I didn't quite have 'all' the appropriate tools.

Mine experience was with a genuine Mitsubishi 1500 kg bar on TF. Maybe a 1200 kg bar is a bit easier to fit?

The 1500 kg bar has "bracing" under the curve of the tongue (the max load will be stamped on the bar, too).

Is that the bar that runs back to under the spare wheel well to the factory 'plugged' hole? In which case, mine had that too and I'd missed that wasn't in the previous description, but that was the easiest bit to put in....

I could always scan in and post up the instruction manual that came with mine if you 'wanted'.

No, it's just on the underside of the tongue itself (see pic). It is where you'd put the D shackle for the safety chain, but isn't on the 1200 kg bars as far as I know (at least, it wasn't on the one I used to have on my wagon).

Best to check the stamp on the bar I guess.

Bar doesn't have to come off......
Bend two bumper cover support brackets at bottom of bumper down out of the way, flex the bar cover back and it'll fit straight up. If you are fitting a Cosmopolitan towbar, you have to file teh towbar tongue cutout a little bit. Nothign wrong with Cosmo bars either if they have teh load rating you need.
It's easiest to drop the rear muffler and heat shield (actually saves time).
Hayman Reese make plug in harnesses that are IDENTICAL to factory harnesses at half price or less. Anywhere that sells Hayman Reese towbars will be able to get them.
Easiest to do this job with the car on stands or ramps and jack the towbar up into place or have a mate help push it up into place. It's not heavy, but awkward.
Fortunately I get to use a hoist to fit these things, cuts the time to about 1.5 hrs.
If ayone in teh ACT is looking for factory towbars for the later Magnas, the boss just bought some stock off a Mitsu dealer, we have some 2000kg? factory bars on the racks now.

Regards, Andrew.
