Hey ppl just recently i started to experience a new noise emminating from my engine (im pretty sure). It is a sort of fan/grind/growl noise (somewhat subtle) if that makes sense. The noise only seems to come on under acceleration (from around 2000 rpm) and it is more apparent at around 4000-5000 rpm, sometimes it does not make this noise at certain rev levels while driving and sometimes it does. I've also found that it makes no difference if the car is hot or cold.

Now my question is, what on earth is causing the sound. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

My possible explanations include a bad batch of fuel (occured after i filled up) as the pump i was using was almost dry, ?gearbox? (please no), or some sort of exhaust problem.

Should i get this checked out or ride it out until i fill up again to see if it subsides.

Cheers for any replies!

Good approach but i would rather find out what is causing the noise just incase damage is being done to the car.

So if u hav experienced a similar noise plz let me know asap.

I also have a 98 TF and have a strange kind of fan/grind/growl noise. It only makes the noise from about 1200 rpm upto around 1800 rpm. Mine also makes the nosie regardless of engine temp. I havn't really had a good look into what it might be, I just hope its not a problem with the timing belt, cos if it goes snappy snappy, its bye bye alot of money money. Does anyone have any ideas? Mines an auto by the way. 3 Litre V6.

Yep i know that noise, im pretty sure that one is pefrectly normal. Mine is like an amplified version of that, on top of that noise at all rpm. confusing stuff :? Can anyone else suggest anything? Its ticking me off because i recently got my car serviced! (a month ago)

here is ur solution...
under the motor u have a Y join that conects ur front and rear manifolds.
in that Y joint is a flap of metal that comes loose and can put a hole in the joint a bit smaller then a 5c peice it rattles when the air passes through. it was designed to direct the exhaust in some certain way but is not realy needed i asked my local dealer about the problem before i got it fixed and they denied the fault ever existed but wanted to charge me $400 to get a new Y join ????????? the exhaust shop i went to fixes the fault for the dealer in question and mitsu charge u $400.
the exhaust shop did it for $40 a big mark up by mitsu hmmm.
all the exhaust shop does is take the pipe off cut it open and take the peice out then weld it back on and fit it good as new.

i also own a TF i was glad i got it done now i just listen to my sweet note from the exhaust. hope this helps you i would give 99% odds on this being the problem for you

cheers brett.

Sounds interestig, could you possibly get any pics of this Y joint? Im gonna jack my car up tomorrow and have a good look under neath. So is this Y joint attached to the exhaust manifolds then? Or is it something thats actually in the exhaust piping? :?

Just an update, my noise has officially gone for good thank heaven. I found the culprit too, it was a bad tank of fuel. The noise miraculously stopped a couple of kms after i filled up (ran the tank pretty dry).

Never fillin up at shell again! :x
