hi all, Im about to start gathering parts for my 96 magna and Im after your advice. I have a Kenwood deck and 2 12" pioneer subs Ill use (via an alpine amp) and I was wondering if its worth replacing the rear 6x9 speakers or just focus more on the front doors. Id like to get a speaker to fit into the existing space without having to put seperate tweeters in and keep it as std looking as possible. Can someone recommend some good 6"? speakers for the front doors and anything else that I might have overlooked. BTW can the front speakers be removed without pulling the trim off if not is there any secrets to getting the trim off or the speakers out, and lastly how do I get the rear parcel shelf out to replace if necessery the 6x9. Cheers Shaun

Concentrate on your front speakers. As most people usually point out, if you go to a concert you face the stage, (as sound coming from behind you has a high frequency roll off which is what allows the brain to work out where sound is coming from) so you need good sound up front. Plus, if you are going to install subs, the general consensus is not to worry about your 6x9s as they'll probably be drowned out by the subs anyway.
I believe you need to remove the door trim to get to the screws that hold the 6" speaker in there. I think 6.5" speakers will also fit in there, somebody else here might be able to help you out here.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who can suggest good speakers to whack in there, otherwise PM the member known as FHRX and he can probably tell you which speakers are the best for the money you want to spend and the music you listen to. Although it's a shame you don't want to go splits. For good sound definition and perception you really need to look straight down the barrel of the high frequency driver.
Rear parcel shelf - well, you could fart-arse around trying to get it out, OR you could go to the hardware and get some 90degree phillips head screwdrivers. Alternatively, get a cordless drill phillips head bit (or are they pozi drive? Anyone?) and clamp it to a monkey wrench at 90degrees so you can get in there without removing the parcel shelf.
By the way, let us know where you live and one of our friendly members may offer to give you a hand in exchange for some cold, refreshing lager or ale. Cheers dude.

But if you plan on putting in subs, then don't bother too much. The only people who should be listenning to your rear speakers are your back seat passengers. Like I said before, your sound source should be in front of you, so get some really nice speakers up front.
Also, oval-shaped speakers (eg 6x9s, 7x10s) distort earlier than round speakers due to their shape. The reason you find oval-shaped speakers in cars is because they are designed to accommodate the restricted area allowed by parcel shelves. By having oval-shaped cones you have more surface area, thus providing better bass response. But if you want more low end, then buy a sub. 8) 8) 8) 8)
However, if you have no intention on buying a sub, then, yeah, get some nice 6x9s.
