View Full Version : Installing strobes in parabolics

I would like to install strobe lights in my third generation parabolic headlight assemblies, in a similar fashion to those shown in this AMC member (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/member.php?u=3707)'s video. EDIT: NO YOUTUBE LINKS! EDIT by NZ_Tamago: Sorry! For video link please see here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showpost.php?p=933074&postcount=1704).
I have already purchased a strobe kit with its own globes, which sit in rubber housings about 2cm in diameter (see attachment). I assume that what is required is for a hole of approximately this diameter to be drilled through the reflector of the headlamp assembly, after which the globes can be jammed in.
Does anybody know any workshop in Sydney which has experience in this field? Given the value of the headlamp assemblies, I really need it done properly the first time. It's not something I'm game to attempt myself. Any assistance would be appreciated - particularly if anybody is able to point me to a workshop which has relevant expertise.
It should be noted that I do not propose to activate these strobe lamps on a road or road-related area (as defined in Rules 12 and 13 of the Road Rules 2008 (NSW) (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_reg/rr2008104/)). I do not require advice concerning the legality of operating strobe lamps in such areas.

Isn't there already a hole where the parkers go in the Veradas/Diamantes shipped over to the USA?

They would already have a set of parkers in them. The veradas have an empty space because the parkers are in the bumper.

Exactly. I'm considering taking the parkers out and putting the strobes in their place - that may well be the way to go. I could then relocate the parkers or scrap them altogether actually, depending on whether or not they are required for my roadworthiness certificate.
That being the case I'd probably only need an autoelectrician to do the wiring. I might think about that actually - could be the easiest way to solve the problem. Better than risking destroying a set of paras...
Where do you buy the strobe kit from?

It was already on there when I bought the car, officer, they just roll off the production line like that, honest... :shifty:

Definitely not first ridiculous idea I've had, certainly won't be the last. "Modifying a Magna...", they said, "You must be joking!" they said.
I'll show 'em... just you wait...
I think I'd have one with one blue and one red light, it would make driving at night more fun, watching everyone pull over in front :bowrofl:
Edit: found them on fleabay, they actually do come in red and blue colors shipped from Canada....

If you drill a hole in the parabolic headlights (in the reflector) you will make bad headlights even worse!
A 20mm hole is a fairly sizeable chunk of reflector!. I'd only do it on the highbeams, you would need to remove the reflector itself from the housing - a hole saw would do it, but the chrome chips off badly on these - it will look a bit crappy.
On these headlights, you are better off to put these into the chrome trim pieces around the reflector themselves - there is quite a bit of spare plastic there, and its ABS (so it wont splinter like the phenolic reflector).

You could have alot of fun with that, but if you get caught out one day by the real deal your ass is toast.
My friends used to do it with flashing red & blue interior neons

Yeah, the same sort of thoughts were going through my mind, hence my asking whether anyone could refer me to someone who actually does this for a living.
Because of the risk of ruining a perfectly good set of paras I'm not prepared to attempt it myself, and I don't really want to give it to someone who hasn't done it before, even if they have some other autoelectrical or mechanical qualification.
Any pointers, anyone?

Id hate to see what the fine is for impersonating a cop is. All someone would have to do is ring the cops and give them your licence plates. I’m sure they would take a complaint about someone impersonating cops pretty serious. Id be careful.

Not something I would actually do

you mount them under the front bumper like you would mount an undercar neon so the light strobes down onto the groung under the car. that would look cool as.

Okay, enough talk about impersonating Police. I have already made clear that I do not propose to activate these globes on a road or road-related area and, whilst it is none of my business how other members conduct themselves in their own time, you would have to be George-Bush-stupid to activate your strobes in traffic.
Thanks for the suggestion regarding an alternative location to mount the globes, however I really want these mounted in the headlamp assemblies, in the manner referred to in the video referenced in this post (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showpost.php?p=933074&postcount=1704). If anyone can point me to someone who could assist me with this I'd be grateful.

i drilled mine, VERY CAREFULLY, i widened the hole that the parkers sit in, to fit some red leds, (i do not drive with them on) they flash to the central locking

Just so you all know - they can be mounted by drilling down through the top of the assembly into the high-beam area and then mounting the strobe globe in the "ceiling" part of the reflector (sticking down from the top).
Or so I've heard :shifty:

have you done it yet? I wanna see how it turned out :D sounds interesting haha.
on a side note: I looked at some other cars with strobes on youtube and found this little story/comment haha.
"My friend is a cop, I was on way home with him and a car tailgating me @ 70MPH and flashing that wanna be strobe, sure that wasn't a undercover.. Hmm ~ He kept flashing that strobe & tailgating, that Mexican ass thought we fall for it. I put hard brake and move to next lane to see his ass, roll down the window and my friend in passenger seat flashed his badge. Pulled him over. He took idiot's registration and told him to come to precinct first thing in the morning.. He got summon and fine.. "
owned much? :bowrofl:
