View Full Version : Dead shocks or loose spring?

Hi guys,

I've tried searching the forums a few times now and have not been able to find anything helpful so I thought I'd make a new post about my issue...

Recently I noticed that the left hand rear side of my car appears to sit higher than my right hand rear side - i.e. I am able to squeeze 3 fingers into the gap between the tyre and wheel arch on the right but can easily put 4 or so fingers into the gap on the left.

When looking up at the springs, the problem side (left) appears to be stretched out more than the right. I have been listening for noises when going over speed bumps etc and have heard a slight noise in the back but it doesn't sound abnormal to me as it is very quiet.

Is it possible that my spring isn't sitting right as it seems odd that it is the only side that's too high? If so, is there anything I can do to fix it (e.g. jack it up and give the spring a shake or sit it properly by hand)?

OR

Is it more likely that my shock may need replacing? If so, is there anything I can look for to confirm this?

Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

To test shocks, a quick way is to press down hard on your boot/quarter panel (and quickly) and let go.

The car should return to ride height and settle quickly, if not, shock is worn.

You can check to see if the shock is leaking aswell - not too hard, grab some stands, a jack, and look underneath.

Though - ride height *should* be a spring issue.

I did push down on the quarter panel and it seemed quite firm. I'll jack it up this weekend and see if I can spot any leakages or other obvious problems.

If it turns out to be a spring issue (i.e. if it has popped out of place whilst on a hoist or unweighted for some other reason at some stage) then is there an easy way of putting it back where it should be or will it need to be removed and reinstalled?

Haven't really got an answer for you but both of my cars have an uneven height in the rear. (both vary by about 5mm.) I have spoken to my suspension guy & he reckons very few cars sit perfect.
