Bit bored at work so I have been reading about people who have painted their car with Rustoleum and a foam roller and appeared to achieve some pretty good and long lasting results. It appears that if you can spare the time, it is a cheap and cleaner way to paint your car. Has anybody tried it or know of somebody who has, and if so, were you successful?:)

If you do a google search quite a few sites come up but here is one:

??

i did a full 2K high build primer and 2K top coat to my GT starlet the past few weeks..

total cost to me was under $280.. all Dupont and Duxone materials..

:) i thought i did pretty well.. no runs, minimal peel, and has buffed awsome :)

yea it has been done a few times before by people with a lot of spare time

there is a lot of rolling and sanding and rolling and sanding to get the desired effect.

worth it if you have a project car, a lot of spare time - haha

Makes two of us...whats great with 2K is that theres minimal work to do after, just dry and drive...

Wow this is really cool. It would be nice to see one in different colour though.

If you scroll down a little bit on this link there is a orange Charger that the guy said he painted with a roller for $50 US. Looks unbelievable for the price.

actually once we put the top coat on we blocked the whole car with 1500, then buffed with Farekla 300 fast cut,

took 90% of the peel out.. i didn't spend the last few weeks blocking the primer with 180 wetthen 300 wet then 600 wet for nothing!!

the car is dead straight :) i can't understand how ppl just do dogey garage spray jobs.. it really isn't that hard to get a 'booth like' job.. there is only one bit of crap we couldn't get out of the top coat.. it's a hair or somthing.. but cos it's white.. you can't even really notice it.. (plus it's down realy low on the side)

Gerard -

nope.. thats retail from Harts Automotive Paint supplies Duxone hibuild primer kit (4L Primer/1L fast hardner - $136), and Dupont Solid white top coat (040 toyota super white II) 2L of colour (it's only a starlet!) 1L universal Reducer, 1L fast hardner $148...

all the paper and consumables like masking tape, white spirits/prepwash, tac cloths, scotch brite pads etc etc i had anyway.. but even so there is probly only $100 max in all of that..

I painted this with a gun. Her name is Betsy.
With Petrol Prices i wish i still had her. 82 Honda Civic if i remember correct.

It was straight as but i didnt put enough clear on the roof....
It had about 3 differnt coloured pannels when i got it.
Next car i would use less thinner for the clear coat as about 90% of it ended up in the air and not on the car...
rest of the car was awsome, Metallic Red (Landrover discovery)

like everyone says Prep Prep Prep.
Tips
Good lighting when you sand is really helpfull.
one of those gun ends on you hose for wet n dry is worth ever cent.

you can see the finish kinda in that pic..

don't have any others sorry :)

ohh.. that was before the 1500 blocking + buff :)

but yes.. it's all in the prep.. i always say to ppl who want to prep the primer and rub it all back themselvs.. be as picky as you can.. cos what the whole car looks like in primer.. is exactly what it's going to look like but glossy with the top coat..

Looks good.

Another tip i do this when priming i use a light colour at first then black for problem spots then when you sand with the block you can see the black spots are low spots :)

i dont know how the hell people with camo style primer get a decent finish i like to have the primer all grey.

grey, then black then sand, then bild up black low spots then sand till its all grey. then wet sand.

also spray guns work better if you have a beer in the other hand. keeps the hand steady!

lol.. it's all about equaling the weight :) the less mix in the gun.. you should have less beer in the stubby..

although i was using Iso free 2k, i still wouldn't drink the stuff..

but yes.. gray with a black guide coat for the final rub :)
