I was talking at work the other day and one of my co-workers suggested I get a Magna V6. Hesitant to sell the 2.6, I decided to have a look anyway and came across a 1993 TR V6 for $500. Just been to look at it and noted a few things.

- Engine needs a valve job, timing belt snapped a while back and bent 1 valve.
- Throttle Body needs to be bolted back on.
- Needs a new (see aftermarket) muffler.
- CV Joints are fairly old, boots have split.

On the upside from that I noted a few advantages.

- Body is straight and dent-free
- Transmission is in great condition
- Engine mounts are all good
- New timing belt and gears supplied
- It's lowered to a perfect ride height, and legal.
- Aftermarket Cruise Control system
- Spark Plugs were all good (no water or oil in the combustion chamber)
- Hoses are all good, cooling system was well maintained

So i'm seriously considering it. The springs, struts, cruise control and transmission are probably worth the $500 alone but if I do get it, i'll most likely just repair the V6.

I have to let the guy know by tomorrow morning. Thoughts?

whats there to lose for that price
go for it man, even if it doesn't work out, surely you'll be able to part it out and earn more than what you payed :)

As has been said, for $500 you really can't lose. Even if the repairs cost you 1500-2000 to get it fully up to scratch, its still worth it.
How many kms on the engine? Whats the interior like?

I say go for it, transfer all your mods over to the new one, fix it up. Sell the old one and recoup some of your moneys :D

The car itself has done 222,000kms and is still running the original motor and gearbox. The gearbox and bottom end of the engine are both in great shape, just the heads that need some work.

Interior indicates the car is by no means an executive... door cards all have trim in other words. The carpet and door cards have probably seen better days (then again, most second gens have some fabric issues) but the way I see it, this is just a prime reason to retrim the doors and swap the carpet out. Seats are good but I have some better ones. Dashboard looks pristine, no marks, cracks or scratches anywhere.

It's a blue interior, so there could be a few issues with my red + black colour scheme in the TR 2.6, but nothing major.

It's an automatic, which most people would say is reason enough not to buy it, but i'm not fussed about it. Magna automatics when well looked after work just fine and if there's a desire for more power later on, there's always the manual conversion option. No worries.

The hardest part will be finding a place for it, I move house tomorrow (great fun, especially after 8 hours work ) but we may be able to leave it there for a week or so, or if we really need to move it we'll try and leave it at the uncle's place.

Now I just need to find out how much it'll cost for a valve job... i'll try and get a quote from work if I supply the parts. May be able to get away with it for under $800. Then it just needs a throttle body, muffler and it's on the road.

 So allow around $1300-$1500 all up including valve job? Don't bother. Just get a complete V6 in working order for that price or less. I wouldn't spend $500 on a bomb that needs additional work done on it. Too much hassle.

Save your pennies, buy a working V6. Or sell your car, save the $1500, put the cash together and get a Verada. Or even a 3rd gen. I got my 3rd gen v6 (photo) (http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii158/dimi108/P9070813.jpg) for $1200 with 5 months rego. You just have to look around. Don't be wasting your cash on a dud.

Too late guys, it's sold.

I pick it up on Wednesday. :)

Checked with work and we do have the required parts, couple of friends in the business can do the fitting and timing. It may take a while since I'm always just a bit down on cash, but it will end up cheaper than a fully working second gen and probably better than most already running ones anyway.

Third gens weren't an option, already collected way too many second ten parts including a diamante bar, grille and indicators, CV joints and shafts, console, seats and trim...

Mate, go to upullit and grab a pair of heads, do the stem seals on them while all are off, get them re surfaced and you are good to go.

The after market cruise is most likely rubbish but again a cruise control conversion when you get the few bits you need from the wreckers is cheap enough and will give you some experience in playing with the wiring.

Good buy if the body is good as an engine is easier to repair than the paint.

Grab the goodies from your 4cyl, get the v6 all good and running, patch up the 4cyl and flog it off, you will at least get your money back

Being in SA you will not have to worry about a RWC either provided yo have the rego papers

Aye, I closed the deal at 10:30 this morning. If I'm lucky I can have this all up and running for under a grand... it sounds like a long shot but let's just say it's "one of the perks of my job".

Otherwise I feel that I got a good deal. Lowered springs, good transmission, good interior and boot, a straight dent-free body, plus a free brand new timing kit included... for $500 and local, just a street away.

Plus it's a second gen 93 TR, I have endless parts for these models around here including most needed to fix this car. That and i'm more a fan of the second gen design... third gen design all around (exterior, interior and engine bay) just doesn't click with me.

i love the second gen shape too.. it has a nice ass :)

if you can have all that working for under a grand then you have a good deal for yourself. now all you need to do is chuck some of the stuff from your 4cyl and you are good to go.. any pics of the car?

No pics yet, although if you take my profile pic minus the paint fade you get a pretty good idea. :P

One thing I loved about the Astron was it's old school serviceability. I always thought the Astron was nice and easy to work on... but the V6 just blows it away. Easy to access belts and timing components, easy to access all sides of the motor and transmission... the Astron does well, but the V6 is a step ahead in contrast.

Mate, you have done well, no paint fade, good body, your 4 cyl muffler will bolt straight on so you are already part way there.

Ignore the ppl saying to not buy it, is always fun plus you spend 1500 and you prob still have valve stem seals, belt etc to do so bah, you have a good deal, good on you.

Presenting the newest addition to the crew. It successfully passed all the necessary checks for the ride height, body condition and vehicle history with Transport SA.

The engine bay needs a bit of a minor cleanup and an intake and throttle body will need to be fitted (gaskets provided). It needs a muffler, which i'll probably take this opportunity to go for a nice aftermarket one, then a head swap from U-Pull-It and she'll be up and running.

I found some nice little goodies when checking up over this car as well, like the fact the transmission is a recon, not the original... and the brakes are in great shape. Struts and springs are all in great shape as well.

Check out how much dust and dirt has accumulated on the bonnet and roof over the 6 months it's been sitting there, it definitely needs a good wash first.

It's now sitting in my Uncle's front yard, where we will start rebuilding it. Can't wait. :D
