Those who are running their Sprintex SC on a manual Magna, how does the gearbox take it?
What transmission fluid are you running? Castrol VMX80?

Is there a need for a transmission cooler? My auto currently has a transmission cooler. When i go manual should i retain it or convert it to an engine oil cooler instead (was thinking of getting one anyway).

My uneducated guess would be that the clutch would be the first to go, apparently the stock items are a bit fail.

Will you be using an aftermarket clutch?

As far as i know you won't be able to run a tranny cooler on the manual g'box. In fact Unless we're talking racing or specialist g'boxes I have never heard of a tranny cooler for a manual g'box.

Yeah i was told this aswell, something about the fluid being a different density. Not too sure exactly.

So yeah your tranny cooler wont be needed in the manual.

Mohit, the manual box will be fine mate. AFAIK, the 5 speed manual in the Magnas is the same 5 speed manual they use in the Galant/Legnum and they're good for bulk torque - probably upward of 600Nm.

Your clutch should be fine too, but the clutch will always be the first to give out and aslong as you remember that a clutch is a consumable item, you'll be right.

Cool thanks for the info guys. Will have to flush out the auto tranny cooler before it's plumbed into the engine oil lines then.

So what manual tranny fluid are you guys using? Do they make mineral and synthetic types for the tranny like they do for the engine?

Castrol Synth is a very good oil, not cheap however. Expect about $30 per L of it. Very big in alot of Evos.

One important thing to make sure is that the oil is GL4. GL5 is not to be used in the Magna boxes due to the Brass Syncros

My gearbox and LSD are fine, and i really suggest you get an LSD. I run the Castrol stuff the above have suggested as its the best stuff for the LSD.

LSD is on the cards for next year once i have more money and when the exchange rate climbs up out of the gutter.

The trans cooler is no good for engine oil, there are specific coolers for engines

In so far as using a trans cooler on a gear box, personally it is not needed, rarely are they even used for basic track work. You would need to pick up a point and pump the oil into the cooler, gear boxes do not get oil pressure, they are splash feed so only a portion of the oil would flow into the cooler anyway

Use a fully synthetic oil, Castrol make good quality stuff I guess, or Motul. I didn't know the syncros were brass, so a GL4 oil is recommended as above. Use whatever the manual says for the grade of oil, but get a good quality brand. At a guess it's probably 85W-90.

What's the diff between the 2 as i thought coolers were all the same. Apparantly not?

the trans cooler has alot smaller inlet and outlets, also alot finer passages for the oil to travel through so would require a bit more effort for the oil to be pushed through as opposed to the auto tranny which is *sort of designer to pass the oil out of the gearbox and through the cooler.

I understand that oil travels through the oil galleries in the engine etc but for the oil to travel outside the block would require less restricion.

You shouldn't need a tranny cooler for a manual box - and/or I don't think they make them. Using a good oil with a high temp tolerance will go a long way.

the main reason you wont get an oil cooler to work on a manual is because it doesnt have an internal pump to pump the oil around.

For those curious, when I asked Indie from IS motorracing he wanted about 5,000 or so to make a custom, manual gearbox cooler, using good parts.
