Hey everyone just a problem that i just ran into too..
on my way to work i had to do a u turn, an had to pull into a driveway, anyway reversing outta the drive way i scraped my tow hook at the front on the driveway, but thought yeah not the first time ive done it!
so kept on driving, first corner that i turned a bit of clunking oops that doesnt sound good.. but i thought id baby it to work and hopefully see whats wrong with it thier..
pulled up to a dound about and as i slowed down the whole car started to shake, alot. like it seriously felt like i my exhaust had falled off and i was dragging it along, so pulled into side street, put it in park checked to see if everything was okay, ntohing was hitting the ground, so yeah got back in put it in drive, and the sound came straight back!!
so now everything i put it in drive or reverse it makes this terrible sound!
sooo at the moment ive just dictched it on the side of the road, i went back tonight to see if i could baby it home, but it just sounds soooo bad and i feel like it would do it more worse then good moving it!
my mechanic said that it may just be an engine mount, and im just hoping it is, does anyone else have any ideas what it might be??

Another vote for wheel bearing here. Possibly even wheel nuts have come loose if the wheels have been taken off recently, also check engines mounts.

I say exhaust is knocking on the chassis.
youve bent it coming out the drivway.
shake wobble it with you hand. see it its knocking.

Your description of the sound aint that good.
It could be your harmonic balancer (bottom pulley) touching when you put in in gear if you have a dud engine mount.
The donk moves when you select a gear

Would hope the engine would not move enough for the mount to hit.
So you think you hit your tow hook, check your trans oil pan for damage to begin with, also check your drive shafts

In his defence not everyone wants to be a home mechanic, more then most we all just wait until something happens instead of checking for these things....then again, if he's been taking it a mechanic, and the boots were ripped then perhaps they should of picked up on it before hand.

This is why we go over the pits evry year... so these problems can be identified and fixed.
torn CV boots are hard to miss as they throw grease everywhere...

LOL No harm done I hope.
Routine maintenance by yourself is a must with a 12 year old car, of any make.
PS I'm not a mechanic either - I just get a kick out of working on my own car. Try it!

Actually, I have a real gripe against ppl who drive cars til they break.
CASE 1: Lent my son my station wagon. I get a lot of parking infringement notices. Got it back when it was making a horrible noise - 4 bolts holding torque converter to drive plate backed off. 2 came out and destroyed the starter motor. I fix. He drives off. Big end bolt breaks, piston and rod through the side of the block. I build a new engine. He drives off. Welsh plug pops out, he drives on. Mobil 1 in the engine, it doesn't seize, but the head melts. I write the car off.
CASE 2: Lent car to son's girlfriend. They break up. She keeps car.
Car looks a real mess 3 months later.
CASE 3: Granddaughter has one of my Magnas. New paint job. Big scrape down the side 2 weeks later. She hasn't noticed.
MORAL of the story - I'm a D*C*H*A* who should stop lending out cars to relatives, because they have no mechanical sympathy.
PS I make no reference to my wife's lack of mechanical sympathy here for my own protection.

All I can say is teach you kids basic vehicle maintainance and if something goes wrong its there problem. And if you do lend your kids the car make on the proviso that it comes back in the sme condition it left, if it doesn't they pay.
My old man taught me and my brother and sister basic maintainance and it's going to be the same for my kids when there old enough.
My daughter watches me work on my car and understands, she even wants to help.

I used to do all my own work on cars, haven't done for about 5 years now, that's what mechanics are for, though I know when something is wrong and check levels every now and then, I used to go into the mech and tell him what I think was wrong and he fixes it, 90% of the time I was right, just CBF'd getting dirty anymore.

Seriously why would you buy parts off ebay?
Drive shafts especially, they are rather important......

haha alls good mate, just had a terrible weekend, and i was tired, and what not.
having to work 30+ hours a week, plus going to unitl, and all that assessment rubbish leaves me no time whatsoever to try and work on my own car. I wash it weekly, and check the fluids thats it. everything else i dont have time for, and thats why i pay mechanics to do the dirty work for me.
