View Full Version : Question for Ralliart Auto owners

I understand that Mitsubishi "re-mapped" the shift points in the Tiptronic Auto transmission in Ralliart Magnas. My question is: did this change cure the maddening tendency for this transmission to go into 5th gear below 60 kph?

Is this regarding your AWD or the ralliart specifically?

Mum's 5sp KL Ei does this too; I don't think it's Ralliart specific.

I should have clarified that! My AWD has the 5-speed Tiptronic, and it seems all these transmissions share an over-eagerness to shift into 5th too soon. The Ralliart Tiptronics were given a more agressive shift pattern. If an owner (or someone who's driven one) can confirm that the revised shifts stop the tendency to change up too soon, I'd be interested to know.

Yeah, I assumed it was regarding the AWD.
It appears to be quite 'normal'. I thought the issue was with my auto but apparantly all AWD owners suffer from this. I don't think anyone has been able to come up with a 'cure' so far.
That's correct, I believe the 5-speed autos in the TJ-TW will shift into 5th gear at 47km/h, which equates to 1050rpm. The transmission will hang on to 5th for a fair while if you gradually increase the throttle. Only a sudden pressing of the accelerator will make it drop back, usually to 3rd.
Or just manually tiptronic-shift it back to 3rd.....but that's inconvenient for what should be a 'smart' transmission.
If you have a sports/VRX exhaust (or an aftermarket sports muffler) it really sounds like the transmission has fallen asleep when it's labouring uphill in 5th at 50km/h.

These transmissions are otherwise excellent, which just makes this minor irritation all the more noticeable. Of course, I've done the usual manual change routine, but that isn't really the answer. My interest in the behaviour of this tranny in Ralliarts is not entirely academic, because if (a very big if!) I were to convert the AWD engine to Ralliart specs, it would make sense to install the Ralliart CPU, which just happens to also have the revised shift for the auto.
Just dreaming.....

I would have thought of this as a good thing for fuel economy. My Verada 4speed auto wouldn't shift into 4th until 60 at least, always annoyed me.

Even with a non sports exhaust, it sounds that way! The 3.5 engine has terrific flexibility, but lugging uphill at less than 1500 rpm is ridiculous. Yet, most of the time, the trans DOES get it spot on.

My gearbox doesn't shift into 5th too early? Mind you, given the gearing in mine, it pulls from idle in 5th.
... what?
If it's that irritating, use more throttle when required to force it to downshift, or just use tipshift as intended.

I'm sure you're right - it's probably an attempt to improve fuel economy. But at 60 kph in 4th, the engine's still only doing about 2000 rpm, which is hardly going to drain the tank that quickly. The problem is exacerbated by the tendency to require a fairly hard prod on the accelerator to wake up the tranny - jzt's comment about the transmission having "fallen asleep" describes the sensation exactly.

What's it doing (rpm) in 5th at 60?

mines spinning over at 1400rpm... @ 60km/hr - AWD tho

On the flat that wouldn't be a problem? Just use tipshift for hills, it'll be smoother too I'd imagine (you know that it'll drop the cog so you don't get too much throttle)

'Course you can always do that but it's an auto............ I shouldn't have to!
I've got used to it now however but yeah, jzt summed it up perfectly. :D

From memory, yes it shifts into 5th very early. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll check tonight and let you know.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't whats being asked here the minimum shift points for the auto in the ralliart? Not a complaint thread about how the normal 5-sp autos shift into 5th at a stupid low speed?

My Ralliart drops into 5th below 60 and just lopes along. It doesn't worry me and it makes the whole ride much smoother and I'm sure it helps with economy. My Mums VRX AWD TW does the same and she doesn't care either. Having driven both I don't think there is a difference in where the changes happen just in the ralliart they are a much more agressive change. My sister in laws 380 is about the same as well but very smooth on the change like the AWD. Frankly I can't see why you would want it to stay in 4th.

Thanks to all for their input to this. It looks like the bottom line is that the Ralliart auto still changes up early (we're all assuming light throttle so far), but all its changes are snappier than normal Tiptronics.
It also appears that this is no problem for a significant number of us - fair enough. Personally, I would rather it changed back to 4th with much less accelerator input, but it's not one of life's big issues.

I think what his issue might be is that when you are driving along a flat road it is fine, but when you start climbing a hill you need to depress the pedal a fair amount to have it drop back, which labours the engine a bit and wastes fuel

Yeah, I get this problem. Pisses me off.

and also the times when you give it a bit too much throttle than you intended and it shifts back a gear too far and redlines instantly........completly out of it's torque range! - you quickly let the throttle off a bit!
