Hey guys

I've done the relevant searches, and read through a lot of stuff so don't flame, but I wanted some thoughts relevant advice directly to this

I'm looking to get a new sports exhaust for my TR, 4cyl carby. I went to Mettams today, and was quoted $340 for a 2.25" straight through sports system, using berklee. I didn't go too much into questions with him at the time because I thought I'd better get some other advice first.

First off, is this a good price for what it is?
Would Berklee be a decent way to go? (I want it to be decently loud)
Any idea of how much I'd be looking at for duals and would I lose much performance/sound by going dual?

Thanks guys

i have no idea on brands, and brands have never cut it for me anyways, i always go custom piping and pick a muffler based on size and dimentions.

are we talking cat back or manifold back?

probably cat back. If you want decently loud then mufflers are a waste, but most people who say loud, mean boomy, as given off by a milotin style cannon. I say loud, as in naturally loud and thats just a 2.5inch striaght pipe from the cat. Wont have happy neighbours and will cost less to boot. If you dont want the sound to be too raspy, get 2.5inch cat back out of mild steel (cheap) wiith no mufflers or resonators, and jsut welded on exhaust hangers to suit the stocko locations.

You will have yourself one very unique sounding car, albeit loud

yep sorry, meant custom piping with a berklee muffler, and cat back

hmm i'll see about just getting a straight pipe, i'll look more into it, just found out thats what my cousin had nd that was pretty loud even on her excel so im sure it'd be pretty good

the setup he quoted me for was the straight through muffler and a pretty small resonator i think he said, plus custom piping

well for that price then you wont be getting much cheaper

id say go for it, because it will sound nice and loud but wont be shockingly loud/noticeably illegal loud.

i had a 3.5inch turboback striaght pipe on my Nissan had one reading of 108dB but i loved the sound, and when all imports are modded the same, it sounded different enough to be cool. I rarely went WOT in public so i got away with it for years on my daily just putting to work and what not

Just wondering why you'd want to bring attention to your self like that?

Berklee are a pretty common-place brand and I'm sure PLENTY of people have used them just as much as walker/lukey on AMC.

If you want loud but not deafening loud perhaps just go a small straight-through akin to something on the back of a Land cruiser diesel, smallest dimensions with largest diameter pipe.

Also is it's 2.25" press-bent it'll be realistically 2", for that pipe it's guaranteed to be press which means you should get it half inch bigger than you want, if you want 2.25", tell him 2.5". I got 2.5" press with a single Berklee straight-through on my V6 and it's not loud, quiet enough to drive 12 hours straight and not be deaf by the end.

Dualies are going to be twice the price plus cut-outs on the bumper etc.. I think you'll quickly get over the ****ty noise the 4cyl brings to the party so perhaps start looking for a second hand oval straight-through on boostcruising (heaps of **** like that on there) or here (more likely to be a better brand in decent condition = not cheap but not ****) and get that slapped on once you've got over it.

mm, yeah, like I dont want loud as in stupidly loud, just a decent sound so I dont sound like an electric car

The main reason I'm upgrading is because I need a new exhaust because mines covered in holes, and while I'm at it decided I should go for something that'll even slightly improve performance and some fuel economy because mines crap.

The reason I ask about berklee is because i hadnt heard much of it before and thought i'd check it out considering everyone normally talks about lukey and redback.

may as well just go with a single, with a straight through and small resonator as originally quoted, but go with a 2.5 then.
Duellies wont be worth twice the amount, especially considering its only a 4cyl, just probably not worth it

Just get the universal fit Lukey sports muffler. $195 fitted, so loud I got a letter from some environment place based on the complaints of an old man. Check out my ride thead for a copy of the letter.

hm well if i can get a lukey one for cheaper, which i've seen more recomendations for, and you say its loud, i might ask for that one instead
although when I was doing searching, i read that some mettams stores arent very enthusiastic when asked for a lukey, but should be fine

i'll ring them back tomorrow and ask them

Just find you local Lukey specialist. You'll get the best price that way.
