View Full Version : Replacing rear brake pads
Hello, I am wondering if anybody has experience in changing the rear brake pads on a TJ magna. Mitsubishi service has told me I cannot do it myself because the hand brake is attached to it and you need a "special tool" to do it. I have just replaced the front and that was extremely easy. Any advice on changing the rear pads is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul :x
the rears are harder because you have to push in the caliper piston and turn it at the same time. Its really not all that hard, just need to have some lateral thinking about it

So the caliper is on a thread ? and do we know which direction to do the rotation? Also on my 1997 Magna the hand brake is not gripping but i have just checked the discs and pads and their is plenty on there. So I just need to adjust the cable under the centre console? Thanks

Hi Paul,
Are you wanting to change the disc brake pads or the internal handbrake shoes?
Very different procedure depending on what you're doing.

I don't remember having to turn them, just pushed them in like the front ones. I think there were different suppliers of brakes for the Magna/Verada so it is possible that some use a different setup. I had an old Nissan which you only had to turn the rear pistion to get it back in - no need to push as well.

Are they still shoes on a 97 Magna with rear brake discs?

TJ calipers are just that, brake calipers. There is no handbrake in the caliper. You're right Jimbo, just push the pistons back in to fit the new pads. Check your caliper slides are lubed and happy days.

Small one piece brake shoe inside the disc. That's the handbrake.

Damn it! Thanks for the info, didn't realise they still used shoes on rear brakes. I noticed my cable under the centre console has a lot of thread exposed so I'm guessing my hand brake shoes are well worn. So in the mean time i guess I will see if the pistons on my 2001 wagon just push back as the Mrs car started grinding so both cars will need discs machined as i saw scoring on mine 97.
