hi all. i got my first car, a tj vr-x and i wanna put in a new stereo. I've allready got an alpine h/u but the rest is stock, i dont wanna spend over $1000 (inc install), i listen to pretty much all kinds of music but a powerful sub is a must, 12" should do me fine, and some front splits. i'd prefer to stick to alpine but im not that fussed.

Have a look in the trading place. I got my Type X 6.5" splits & a few other bits and pieces for a bargain here. Saved myself a lot of $$$.

Im no audio guru, but especially if you wanna stay in alpine here's what I'd recomend, mostly what I've got/getting too
Alpine H/U: already have
Type S front splits: $150ish
Type S 6x9's: $150ish
Type S 12" Sub: $200ish
V-Power mono Amp: $150ish
V-Power 4ch Amp: $300ish
Wiring: Aprox $80ish
i think these prices are aproximately right, and should give a pretty damn good setup for a first system
best way is to go into some audio shops and listen to their stuff in there
and if possible hunt on here, you can pick up bargains from other members if you dont mind buying 2nd hand
someone'll probably correct some of these prices a bit better, chances are iv gone wrong at some point
EDIT: Far out, nice first car to get a TJ VRX, lucky guy lol

My recommendation - you have gone far enough with Alpine... move on :D
Up front perhaps:
Blaupunkt THC 662 $199
DLS B6A $229
MB Quart ESA216 $229
Morel Tempo 6 $244
Vibe BlackAir $244
Sub wise:
Treo TSi $299
OZ V12.3 $299
Vibe BlackAir MKII $295
DD 512 $249
PPI PCX 124 $225
Amps:
Jaycar 4x 100wrms will be fine $299
Make the box yourself and hunt down a wiring kit. :D At the end of the day, get ot their and audition as much as possible!

Can easily do it cheaper than Alpine Type-S system...
My system -
Alpine iDA-X100 headunit - $320 (new)
Alpine SPR-17LS type-r splits - $170 (used)
Jaycar 2x100wRMS amp - $30 (used, bought as a package with other splits I later sold)
Alpine SWR-1221D 12" type-r sub - $140 (used, some cosmetic damage to the cone, didn't care)
Jaycar 2x150wRMS amp (500wRMS bridged) - $130
Sub box, grille, extra felt, and a small amount of cabling (the rest came with the amps already) - $80
$550 excluding headunit. I might replace the factory 6x9s at some point. Might not.

I'm in highwycombe (eastern suburbs if thats easier). One of my mums friends works for a car audio place, he quoted me $570 for front splits, a 12" woofer (both alpine type s) with amp and box (that doesnt include install). from what i hear the install would probably cost $300??? i have no experience with car audio so those of you with alpine type s gear, how does it go?, or what would i be better off upgrading, the sub or splits?
and for those of you that work at car audio places how much would i be looking at for 6.5" type R splits with a type x 12" sub with an appropriate amp and that system again with a 15" type R sub instead of the x?
$570 is pricey for such mediocre gear. i'd sell you a type-x sub and 600W RMS alpine amp, and rebaffle a sealed 12" box for you for $600. this would be infinitely better than the type-s stuff.
then all you need to do is get the splits (which i could also provide for $150 if your interested, CDT Kama 6.5" splits, again much better than the type-s splits, and imo better than type-r)
thats $750 right there, and the retail on that gear totals about $1700. get a $60 wiring kit, and youll only slightly be blowing out your $1000 budget for a much much better system.

hmm that does sound good but i do need it installed....
typo'ed my last sentence.. meant to say 'get it installed and you will only blow out your budget by a little bit'
and if you went to alberts cannington, and told them you were told you could get a good deal if you came here by an MEA member', they will install for a good price.
or one of the AMC blokes in WA might be willing to do a cashie, i would but im just too busy all the time atm.

that sounds great all i gotta do now is figure out what i want first. rims or stereo i'll p.m you when I'm ready to buy, gotta get through exams first..... sigh damn school ruining my fun
no dramas, its just stuff ive bought and either have no more use for or never got around to using (like the type-x, brand new in box still.). its all just sitting around in my closet now :P

i'd sell you a type-x sub and 600W RMS alpine amp,
wouldnt that be a little underpowered amp wise for a type x?
also i used to work (well technically still do but just out on the road ) for westside car audio

you would but no big deal..
600's good for an X, wouldnt run it on anything less than, but 600 to an X will certainly sound the goods

VRX is a bloody good car for an L-plater :|
Wish my first was a VRX. I was driving a TP magna till mum blew it, then my gfs 95 Festiva, then my 88 Corolla Hatch, and now eventually my TH magna.

I got to drive my TP once! It was actually mine, given by parents - after it blew they didnt get me another one :(
Friends parents gave me the 88 rolla hatch
Then I went and blew about 8g (after repairs, belts, sale) on my car.
Supprisingly the rolla is still alive - hasnt been serviced in 30,000kms :bowrofl:

Ah first cars, mine was a 94 Barina (the first of the Opel Corsa Barinas). Was a great little car that, 5 speed manual, could thrash the hell out of it and it wouldn't do more than 8L/100, never had a single problem with it. Then I moved to a big 6 (then another because it wasn't manual :P).
