Starter motor clicking when trying to start, not even trying to turn, does that mean replacement needed and where exactly is the starter, at front or back of motor.

Michael

When you turn the key and all you get is "tick tick tick tick" means you got a flat battery.:)

Or a bad connection on the leads going from battery to starter motor, (often at the battery terminal.)...............
......if yer lucky!

Or faulty starter motor/solenoid.

There is a way to test if it is the battery.

1. With the car off and keys out, attach a multimeter (set to voltage) to the battery, and check the reading. It should be above 12v for a healthy battery.

2. Watch the multimeter (voltage reading) while turning the lights and high beams on, it should stay relativly close to 12v, definatly no lower than 1v lower.

3. Again, watch the voltage reading and crank the car. The voltage usually drops to about 8v when cranking, if it goes below 6v the ECU cuts out on "under voltage protection", but the motor usually wont have enough voltage to crank past a compression stroke anyway.

I know it sounds crazy, but give it a few taps with a spanner. Used to fix the old camry all the time.

That or leave it in gear and roll the car forward and backwards if it is a manual.

That happens when the starter solenoid is jammed on the flywheel.
