Hi there Magna Boffins,

I've got a small leak from the cam plate 'O' ring which came up at my last recent service report. I've opted to do it myself but need more info.

Can anyone tell me:

1) Where exactly this 'o' ring is?
2) How I would get to it, that is, what must be removed to get to it?
3) How complicated will it be?

I've worked on the car before - changing rear bank spark plugs and minor things like that so a few tips from the experts here would help.

Also, a couple of quick pics from a camera phone would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

There is one O ring on the distributer housing and there is one on the front cam "plug".

The distributer one is easy to do but the front cam plug will require the water housing to be removed so as to remove the cam plug and replace the O ring.

Check out this thread, think it's the one you're talking about.

Its called a cam cover thrust plate - there's only one - on the front bank - right hand side. Actually instead of removing the water housing I found it much easier to hacksaw the top off the bolt, removing it completely and then replacing it with a stud and nut. If you're interested I can post pics or instructions.

the actual O-Ring is cheap - somewhere between $5-$10 from memory

I did mine without removing the water housing. A little bit fiddly but is definitely possible.

Ditto. Just take your time and it's quite easy.

In contrast, I replaced this o ring on the TE 3.0 without issue as there was enough room but on the 3.5 KH, there isn't. I wouldn't think there was difference but I'm not sure.

Thanks for all the insight fellow AMCer's,

I'll have a gander and let you chaps know.

Just as an after thought, the fellow at the Mitsubishi service dept reckons that the o ring replacement involves removing the rocker cover. Any thoughts on that one? From the replies I received here, doesn't sound like it's the case.

We'll have to see....

Correct. Not the case.
