Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone has put a 5 speed tiptronic AWD gearbox into their TJ AWD? My box is nearly blown and need another one and a TL AWD is all I can find and the wrecker told me that they don't fit??
Please only reply if you definatly know the answer to this or know where I can get the answer to this question as it's alot of money if it doesn't fit.
Cheers, Paul.

The 5-speed isnt an issue as they both are 5-speed tippy. wat i'm worried about is physical size, ratioes and the centre diff inside the gearbox housing?

I would ring Mitsu and ask them as they built the car, but I am quite sure that the drive train is a direct carry over from the TJ to TL so physical size and ratios and the like would be the same.

Doubt Mitsu had the money to change it between the TJ and TL lol

All the AWD's have a 5 speed tiptronic gearbox.
Get the wrecker to tell you the model code.
Shop manual only refers to one type.
I'll bet you $100 that they are identical.

yes you need the model code. On your top of gearbox under the front air box a bit are two lines of numbers. You need both lines of numbers. You are correct with the ratios. It is the final drive ratio that if wrong can put your car into limp home mode. I found nothing to suit a KF verada a couple of years ago cos it had to come from a KF verada.(different final drive to other magnas)
Funny how the wrecker knows it doesnt fit???????

one thing that did change between the TJ and TL/TW in general (FWD) which i found strange is the clutch for the manual cars...
TH/TJ = evo7/8/9 clutch (exactly the same)
TL/TW = evo 5/6 clutch (exactly the same)
evo 5/6 clutch & flywheel is smaller in diameter than a evo 7/8/9 clutch and flywheel..
why did they fit smaller clutch and flywheel to the TL/TW than the TH/TJ???
dunno if its relivant to what your asking but "might" be.. as if there was some need to use a smaller flywheel then maybe the auto trans is also different for a reason...

Yer thanks everyone, the answer to the question is that they are not the same. I rang Mitsubishi and the part numbers are all different and he said they are a different box...Gotta love Mitsubishi to make things difficult!!!!!!

Smaller = Less costs involved
Mitsu large cars dept were heading towards broke going on to the TL-TW, suppose they were just cutting costs.
