Travelled thru Blue Mountains last week. Lots of mist/fog, so was thinking time to fit some fog lights. I have a TJ Advance. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Are the standard Magna/Verada fog lights any good, if so I will look at wreckers. Any suggestions on aftermarket fog lights. Has anyone added lights who can comment on wiring, light in dash etc. I am hoping most of the wiring will already be in my car. Notice form handbook that switch (on cars equipped with foggies) is part of the indicator stalk. Maybe worth trying to get one of these stalks also. I assume fog lamps only work when indicators or low beam selected, not together with high beam and also not on their own.

There's no wiring in place.

There's a "fog" relay position in the relay box in the engine bay, but when I loosened the relay box it was still pretty inaccessible.

I used a relay/fuse combo (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SY4077&CATID=28&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=754) for mine, tapping directly onto the battery for power. You need to use the parker light circuit to activate the relay, and then switch it either with an aftermarket switch (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SK0955&CATID=&keywords=switch+led&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=) rig up the genuine one (I did both - initially with aftermarket one poking out below the ashtray and now with genuine one I bought here.

I screwed the relay/fuse to the passenger side strut surround.

There's no "fog" indicator light in a non-foglight car, so be careful not to drive around with them routinely on - that was one advantage of the non-genuine switch that I had).

You can see the wiring (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=34862&d=1202006747) for the aftermarket switch here (it's the same for genuine but without the LED and it's earth). Ingnore the "LED not working" notation!

The genuine switches go for anything between $30 and $80 on here, and $200 at wreckers. I got my lights here for $200, which seems to be the going rate (they're more than $400 a piece from Mitsubishi!)

There is a socket in the cluster to place a bulb, any way to tap in to that and make sure there is an indicator.

How about the warning beeps, any way to tap that to beep when the fogs are on as well as headlights?

Okies - Foggies. I bought at Auction a very rough-treated TJ Sports, complete with smashed foggie-lenses (of course, these cannot be bought as glass-only). Prices of Fogs are excessive (to say the least) as Genuine spares, I believe the combo light stalk is even worse genuine and generally considered by Wreckers to be worth its weight in gold.

Beware, that TE/TF/TH/TJ foggies are mounted differently - must confess I don't understand precisely how - but I bought E-bay used replacements and had to swap; brackets etc around - the main plastic fog-lamp housing is same, but different brackets and clips are grafted onto it depending on Series (TE vs TJ) and possibly model (Sports vs Verada etc).

I'm not convinced these standard fogs are that good. The combo-switch on Steering column is slick, however.

In an Exec, now driven by my parents, I bought cheap "AUNGER" fogs from a clearance type shop ("The Warehouse", was "Clints", now seems to be "Sams Warehouse" in NSW. These were quite tiny elipse-shaped lamps, still needed lots of trimming of the plastic "trumpets" below TJ bumper to accommodate fogs and bracket. Good news is, a convenient bolt-hole in front bar right above those "trumpet" air scoops - might need to file away a bit of bar cover plastic to get a mounting bolt through. We used the included wiring kit and relay etc, and bought a better-looking "Narva" rocker switch, which we mounted below ignition key in the under-steering-wheel-lower-dash-panel.

OH, we ignored the instructions with Fog-lights too - they intended to wire so fogs were switched-on completely independent of the park/head-lights. We said stuff that, and wired them the old-fashioned way of fogs only active if Parks or Heads were switched on.

Now I'm idly wondering if VRX fog-lights are better than the "rectangle" style on TJ Sports and KJ Verada. AND, I'd rather have driving-lights than fogs - but as OP struck fog in mountains,I know that's what he's after!!

TE/TF are the same as Verada ones - one side with a bolt and the other with two locator lugs.

TH/TJ ones are totally different, with just a bolt either side.

Not impossible to fit older ones in a TJ, but not easy either.

Yes there is an fog light indicator light socket in the rear of the cluster, but there's no lens on the front, so you wouldn't be able to see it illuminate :(

Not impossible to fit older ones in a TJ, but not easy either.

te-tf are 2 lugs on the outer side ont a screw on inside.

verada's all modles Ke - Kj are the same 2 screws at the top of the bracket.

th - tj are 1 screw either side of the light, nothing diff about the vrx they just have a plastic bit infront of the light to make them look diff.

ive got 2 sets if anyone wants them 1 set of te-tf and 1 set of th-tj. $200.

also the the factory stalk is very very easy to wire in.

Thanks Guys for explaining how Fogs differ - can't believe the VRX is just shrouded lol lol .

Due to another great AMC thread I have been able to add a bulb in my KJ, and now have the "parkers on" green light over near my fuel guage (this is in the "blackout" Verada cluster). I'm hoping to try the same trick in my TJ Sports, since it has the cluster lit whether lights are on or off. Just have to pop a bulb in the empty socket (of which there are several behind cluster.

In an Exec model cluster, with the grey plastic surrounding dials, there is no way to add a bulb?
The fogs indicator is more or less smack-bang in the middle of the cluster at top - between speedo and tacho, not far from blue high-beam indicator. Would be a shame if that lens is blanked-off in the surround.......

Upside is, the rocker-switch shown in previous post is exactly what I used for aftermarket fogs in our Exec and the LED in the switch is a good indicator if Fogs are on. LEDS in switch come in about 4 colours, too - shop around. Red, Green most common, Aber also avail and MAYBE blue. You just need a seperate earth wire on the switch to allow the LED to light-up.

There is a stalk with fog switch at Pick 'n' payless blacktown, Also parts of the foggies but I can't remember if it was just to brackets or what model it was

Just half way through my install, TH Exec has light socket for fog light and wiring back to the connector to the front loom (B74, 3) Red / Green wire if I remember, but the fog light indicator is blanked off.
Wiring to the instrument panel looks the same as the sports , I solved it buy getting a sports cluster (I wanted the white dials, and the red illumination). Need also to spice a lead to switch the relay from the sports / verada switch, as this wire terminates at the plug (B73,7) the neutral (-ve) return is OK at the switch, so this does not need to be wired.
No continuity on the coil side of the relay, to the tail lamp relay, so you to splice this in, though there is 12V on the switch. Easier to put in external relay I used narva 68060 with external fuse, I think basically all the wiring needs to be done in the engine bay to the lights.

A few questions. Are aftermarket fog lights better than Mitsubishi?? What about alignment/aiming the lights. I imagine it could be a pain in the A trying to line aftermarket lights to shine in the right place. Is there an adjustment on the Mitsubishi lights or do they just line up correctly when installed?

Mitsubishi ones bolt in with correct vertical alignment. Left / right on mine was fine too, but there is a Philips head screw poking out the side (with access port already in the black plastic surrounds) for adjusting it.

And yes, they do work well in fog. Wide and low spread of light, in dense fog Brown Mountain on Snowy Highway) I've turned my headlights off and seen much better.
