Guys - I'm noob to posting - please tell me poiltely if I have put this is wrong place etc.

At Pick-n-Payless Blacktown NSW today, found bugger-all for me, but did notice a VERADA "black-out" instrument cluster there. It had been pulled-out, all available bulbs had been stripped out of it, and flexible printed circuit had been disturbed but it didn't APPEAR damaged.
The black-out face had no scratches etc. Unsure what they would have on it price-wise.

If anyone is interested, I put it safely in the boot of a Maroon sedan, which is about 2nd row from the main "corridor" into the yard. Beware - me hearties - the boot has no struts and may bite unsuspecting pirates who want a spiffy dash!!

I already have the black-out/lightshow dash in my KJ, and quite like the "white-dials-glow-red" in my TJ Sports - so I had no interest in this item - but recall some guys wanting one. /phil

Found it in one of the exec magnas right?

I pulled it out of the KJS1 and tried to see if it fits a TE-TH, no go :( There are 2 harnesses I cut off sitting around there somewhere too and I took the headliner off the KJ. Not much left on it :P

most of the magnas and the lone verada were stripped of their litle bits and pieces mainly larger items left.

So how do these "Blacked-out" dashes work?
What do they look like (on & off)?

I seriously need to take a walk around some used car yards and wreckers - it's been ages.

1. car is off. the cluster cover (the bit you wipe dust off continually) looks glossy black. Can't see thru the lens/cover unless the sunlight is shining on it full on.

2. Turn key on. First the fuel/temp guage backgrounds light up. then the speedo/tacho backgrounds light up. THEN....... (ta-dahhhhh!) the needles of all dials and the warning lights light-up. Life goes on, earth spins on its axis, etc

Its continually lit when key is on, whether lights are on or off. Dims when lights switched on, there is also a manual button nr odo button to dim display if u want to. Intensity of lighting is variable using the usual rheostat in the bezel under the display - nr key. it has - wait for it - TWO trip-odometers A and B. The odometer display is pale-blue fluorescent, in little box sitting ahead/underneath main dials.... a button toggles Trip A / Trip B / Odometer.

One at Wreckers must be same as my Verada - KJ series 1. I have Trip Computer display above the centre-vents in middle of dash. RANT - Trip display above radio is FAR superior than Series 11 TJ in the dash. Series one is LARGER, HIGHER, SAFER/BETTER EYE-LINE. Just my opinion.

I saw the item in the floor pan of a lower-spec car. Didn't see the looms nearby - but as all of AMC has plundered and pillaged Pick-n=Pay ahead of me, its not surprising. You guys are lucky to be able to pop-in ----- takes me 5-6 hrs drive to cruise thru Pick-n-Pay, then same drive home!!! Hope this unit might be good for someone - seems like they'll be up for a challenge to use it in lower-spec vehicles..... but you guys like a challenge, eh??? /phil

Yeah the startup sequence is half the appeal, it just looks so good :D

Wiring would be different between the KJ and TJ, since the TJ has a mechanical odo and the KJ has digital. With the TJII this changed to be incorporated into the same trip computer as the KJII (mounted inside the instrument cluster, as opposed to separate above the air vents).

I want to try switching my TL cluster for a KJII/KL/KW one, just need to find one (and one thats not half a million $$$s).

We left our mark last time Pete, Dean and I were there (engraved "AMC was here" into the damaged rear panel lol)

Here's a close up of the instrument cluster. Very crisp and clean. A lot like Toyota Optitron instrument clusters.
