Hey dude, not sure about prices on a AC unit, but $800 does seem a bit steep.

As for swapping your grille. Check around wreckers or ebay. Simple swap and grilles are swapable with all models in this range: TE-TJ, KE-KJ - however the J models are designed to have a nose on the bonnet and look stupid without them :P

Grab an AC unit from wreckers. Get a mechanic(not the boss) a carton to install it. Shouldn't take to long.

if your after a chrome grill, they are pretty rare. best is to try Mitsubishi, not quite sure oin the prices though. with the aircon, have you gone to get a second opinion, it may just need a re-gassing. also does your aircon light flash when u press it?

If you really (truly) need a new Air-con Compressor, the price given might be in the ball-park. These things do wear out, and esp if run low on gas/oil.

Not quite sure when, in relation to Magna model range, but the type of refrigerant gas used in car air-con was changed to something less damaging to ozone (climate change, ya know).

It might be good idea for OP to get another opinion. Would be a shame to be sold a new/exchange air-con compressor - if all is req'd is parts in the clutch, or even a bloody fuse!!

To the original poster, CHECK the TECH TORQUE thread in these forums - there is a STICKY post near the top, which has downloadable WORKSHOP MANUALS for your model. Go through the simple checks of air-con system - eg: have someone in car switching air-con on/off while engine running - you check (carefully!!) if you can see/hear the clutch engage on the compresor. Sadly, compressors are fairly obscured in engine bay and BE CAREFUL of fingers in drive belt etc.!!!!

Also, make a few phone calls - ask various air-con businesses of rough price if new compressor is required. Of course, also understand that if compressors needs replacing, that means you will be charged to have old gas sucked-out and new gas put back in system. Repuatble air-con dealers are bound by strict laws (backyarders and dodgy-bruvvers may not be so careful??). BUt try to be an educated buyer, check what they tell you and ask to be shown what was replaced.......

That was back in 1994, I know because I had to get my 94 Barina aircon regased, and they weren't initially sure if it was R134 or the older one, and that was the year the changeover happened.
