View Full Version : Someone borked my taillight wiring. Where's the reverse sensor?

OK, so just recently noticed that when you hit the picks in my car, the reverse lights come on as well as brake lights and the high mount stop light.

Then realised that in reverse, it's exactly the same. Reverse lights come on in combination with ALL THREE brake lights. Yep, in reverse. Also, if you hit the brakes while in reverse, ALL of the lights get a little brighter.

Parking lights (when headlights are on) are normal.

So, where's the reverse gear sensor so I can run a new loop for it? CBF'ed finding the actual fault in whatever the **** the previous owner has ****ed up by being a ****ing retarded **** and messing with wiring for ****ing replacement taillights which are exactly the same ****ing design as the ****ing factory lights, just darker.

pretty sure the sensors on the gearbox
have alook at the gearbox and you should see a wire on top
that should be the reverse sensor

Because I really wouldn't know where to look to find such a stupid fault. Tempted just to give it to an autoelectrician and tell them to deal with it, or remove reverse bulbs and just stay out of carparks.

Short of pulling half the interior apart to find where it is...

The problem may very well be at the tail lights, have you had a look to see if they've rewired it for the new lights? Might've done the same dodgy work on both sides thinking its right.

Mr_Roberto, doesn't the reverse wire come off the inhibitor switch? When I've looked at the wiring diagrams in the past theres a reverse wire which runs through the cluster reverse light and through to the reverse lights at the rear of the car. I'm presuming in a manual it'd just be direct to the lights. Had to understand how someone could even mess that up really. lol

i dont know if it is the same, but this happened in my sisters pulsar!!
she put the wrong type of globes into the lights, and they were the wrong voltage or something and it caused the excact same problem!!
maybe this will be a easy first step to have a look at!!

Bad Earth.
Find the wiring back from each rear light. Slacken, clean and retighten each of the earthing points.

Try putting the indicators on.
LH side first. If the other lights do not pulse then the problem in on the RH side.
Put the RH indicators on and look again.

Current is trying to find the easiest way from the lights back to the system ground of the body.

Lowest bulb resistances are the indicator and Stop light maain bulbs which are all 21 W.

Ditto the bad earth. Honestly. Check all the earth connections.

Cheers people, gives me something to work with =) much <3

Earth would make sense I guess. I've checked the plug for the right taillight - when brakes are on, both reverse and brake light wires show 12V, when disconnected from the taillight.

fuggen whut... checked the left side lamps because I hadn't looked at them yet - behind my sub. Left stop lamp bulb had gone grey but hadn't blown yet. Took it out, put it back in, voila, no problem... I'll replace the bulbs on both sides, even though neither have blown, the left is obviously on the way out and the right might as well be done at the same time.
