Best way to correct that understeer on 3RD gen magnas is to fit a rear sway bar, which I am keen to do. Does anyone know which Magnas/Verada sedans were factory fitted with sway bars and if so what size. It seems there were 2 lots of Lower control arms and cross members. I am not keen to fit new control arms and a new cross member. DId all Sports and all Verada sedans have sway bars? See the Autospeed article on rear sway bars for FWD cars.

Pretty sure the Sports, VR-X and Ralliart Magnas all had sway bars along with the GTV & GTVi Veradas.
All AWD's have them as well.
No idea on size. 18mm or 20mm?

Whiteline make kits for the Non swaybar fitted models, Part nos are BMR69Z for the 22mm Adj, BMR69XZ for the 24mm and the 28mm (one off run) is from memory a BMR69C. Also Whitelines prices go up next fortnight by 10% as raw material costs for RR has gone through the roof, its the same deal for most suspension gear.
They come with all the brackets and bolts needed for Installation, ive fitted 3 and they take around 20-40min give or take. Ill get around to doing a DIY tonight with some more detailed pics then what the instructions have that they send you.
Oh and pricewise they are around 230-280 depending on who you go through.

Question for Magna 00. There are no attachment points on my car that I can see to attach the sway bar to the cross member and also no 'LUGS' to attach the end of the ball joints to. Does the Whiteline kit include clamps or some such. Otherwise there seems no way I can fit a sway bar. Look forward to he DIY. I imagine the car must be standing level on all 4 wheels when one tightens things up. Are the adjustable bars worth getting or are the medium and hard setting just way too hard. I feel a soft sway bar will be the go, as at the moment there is no bar.

The way they fit up is there is 2x L shaped brackets that use the original bolts on the rear section of the subframe, and for connection to the lower control arm they have a triangle shaped bracket that fits on the main bolt holding the control arm onto the hub assembly and a U bolt to keep it centered, then its just a 2 eyelet linkage connecting that bracket to the swaybar itself.
Doesnt have to be sitting on all 4 wheels when you tighten it as its pretty hard to get in there without the wheels off. With the hardness, ive got the 24mm one set on medium, (they have 3 adjustment settings) and its nice and responsive, without being too hard.

I just put a Whiteline rear adjustable sway bar onto my 2000 Verada - which had no original equipment rear bar.
Just be careful that the correct kit is ordered -you will need the bar itself plus the fitting-kit, which is as described in the post above.
Also, note that for Verada's - the Whiteline Catalogue doesn't list all kits (it suggests that Verada's all had original rear sway bars, cos it doesn't list the "Bar + Fittings" kit under the Verada heading. Be assured, my Verada had no original bar like my Sports. We just ordered the Bar from the Magna section of Whiteline Catalogue, and gave them a call to make sure.)
The Bar and fittings come well-packed, but NO USEFUL INSTRUCTIONS AT ALL!!! We got one sheet of 4 different ways to mount the linkages, so 1/4 of that sheet applied to our double-eyelet style linkage. Even then it mentioned placement of WASHERS against the bushes, and - you guessed it - there were NIL washers in the kit supplied.
We fiddled all day on Bathurst Race day, found about a dozen ways the bar might fit and eventually did what is described above.
However, I am getting a "clunking" occasionally, esp on passengers side - need to check what is contacting. If any members have pics of their after-market bar fitted to non-OEM vehicle (rear sway bar), please post a pic, so I can check we haven't made areal hash of it??

Thanks Wookiee, that was really good pics - seems like we've done it right after all.
I'll have to have a look-see under my KJ and try to work out what is going on (I'm away from home in the Sports at the moment). I'll try to work out if longer linkages would help my "clunk" problemo, or else ring Whiteline and see if they'll supply a new/different bar like they did for you.
The pics you took were a great help. I'm also not sure if I've tightened the nuts/washers on the linkages as much as you had. We actually got no washers in our kit, but found some to do the job.

Wookiee, thanx for the photos. I have decide to go with the adjustable bar, Getting it from Jim Hunter Suspension $285, plus $55 fitting. Decided for once to get someone else to do the work. Just hope this turns out to be a good decision.

grab some nylock nuts too!
I lost a mount due to the supplied nuts working loose.

Best thing i did was fit the whiteline adjustable swaybar. Although I have no idea how to adjust it to the stiffest setting :(

Well, I still have to get around to sussing out the new rear sway bar on my KJ and why it "clunks" now and then.
However, to answer the question above - the end of the "adjustable" rear sway bar has three holes, which are where you bolt the linkages to the sway-bar.
These holes on each end of the bar are only a few centimetres apart. But bolting the linkage into a different hole varies the amount of leverage applied when one wheel hits a bump and the torsion of the sway-bar transmits this to the other side of the car.
<<consults Whiteline website>>
The holes nearest the end of the bar gives the "softest/least" setting. The holes away from the end of the bar (thus giving a shorter lever) are the "Hardest/Firmest/Most" setting.
I hope it is obvious that adjusting the sway-bar is done by moving the linkage on BOTH sides of the bar, and bolting into the same/corresponding holes on each side.
The Whiteline site has an FAQ at:
http://www.whiteline.com.au/docs/instructs/Z320_WLswaybar_general.pdf
The Whiteline "blade adjustable" rear sway-bar to suit a 3rd Gen (which had no OEM rear sway-bar) uses the "double-eye" type of linkage.
Cheers, Phil
Thanks Phil, I will try and give it a go myself when I have time. I am interested to see how much difference there is from medium to hard. Whats the torsional rigidity of the bar like when trying to move it to a new eye? Can it be done easily by hand?
Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Adjusting mine was quite easy - you could always unbolt one side, then the other, before doing-up in new hole - that would have basically no torsion on the bar at all.
I think we fitted mine on softest setting, then I adjusted it a day or so later to middle setting. I am yet to try the firmest setting.
Looking at Wookiee's thread - a LINKY in his post above - I don't think we tightened the Eye-link washers as tight as Wookiee did, that's something I wanna check.
I may also contact Whiteline/Redranger about the clunking, and see if they will have a look at my install - I may be down their way later this week with time on my hands.......
Cheers, Phil

Guys,
Got around to ringing Whiteline/RedRanger yesterday, about the Rear Sway Bar BMR69Z (bar and fittings kit) which is contacting under the car.
Spoke with a guy named Grant and he suggested I take it to the Pedders outlet here in Tamworth NSW for them to check if we fitted the bar right. Well, about 3 hrs later and several phone calls to Whiteline/RedRanger, including emails of photos back-and-forth - we have reached the conclusion that I installed my bar correctly and that it is contacting other parts under the car.
Whiteline seem interested to help, tho I haven't spoken with them directly this morning - they have been talking with the Pedders guy (which is really just Service Dept of a larger car dealer up here). Whiteline seem to think no-one else has had trouble with one of their rear sway bars not suiting the magna/verada.
If any of you guys have had problems, would you mind posting, or PM to me, with some details so I can advise Whiteline? (Wookiee, I'll send a PM to you soon, hope that's OK).
Cheers, Phil ( phillip_hall@telstra.com )

yeah, I had problems with my sway bar hitting the trailing arm of my suspension.
I'm pretty sure they made up another bar for me, but it didn't help.
I drove up to Whiteline in Campbelltown and showed them what was going on. they also suspected that I had installed it incorrectly, and suggested I turn the mounts on the lower control arm around (which *may* have given me 5mm more clearance).
when I upgraded my standard rear shocks to Koni's, the sway bar stopped contacting the trailing arm :D
not really much help, I know.
I also found Whiteline to fairly helpful during the whole process.
cheers,
.wook
