simple question:

Is there an amp which will power both a subwoofer and all the speakers in my car? or do I need two amps?

I know jack crap about car audio, so any help is good help!

depends, i would reccomend you use 2, but i used to run 4x100wrms jaycar, ran front two channels to fornt speakers and bridged the rears for the sub

There around but there very hard to find, well they are in Townsvillelol lol

Also depends if your running front splits and sub of a amp with the rears running of the deck or do you want front, rear and sub off one amp?

My opinion would be to run two amps, 1 dedicated to the sub like a 1/2 channel Monoblock and a 4 ch amp to run the fronts while the rear speakers of the deck as rear fill.
You'll hear most of your music from the front with the sub providing the bass.

Yes. Yes there is.

Plus Hertz HP5

You would be looking for a 5 channel amp. 4 to power speakers, 1 to power sub.

Jaycar have a 5 channel aswell

It depends how many speakers you want to run.
If just the fronts, then any 4ch amp will do it, sent ch1&2 to your fronts, and ch3&4 bridged for the sub.
Or get a 5ch amp as above.

would there be much noticeable difference if i powered just the fronts and sub of the amp rather than getting a 5ch and powering the lot?

Well that all depends what amp you actually get.

I started out with a 5ch amp (soundstream lil' wonder) and that did a pretty good job. Powered my fronts, rears & sub. I was quite happy, but got the bug and wanted more.
I opted for more powerful front speakers, ditched the rear speakers and got a much more powerful 4ch amp.
Often people got in my car and were surprised that I didn't have any rear speakers by the sound that was coming through.
However everyone is different, and people love their 6x9s :P

Perhaps for you, unless you've got some top end fronts, it's be a good idea to get a good 5ch and work with that?

Go for separate amps, that way if you want to upgrade one component, i.e. fronts, you then dont have to buy a whole other amp.

I think a 5 channel is a bit restricting, cause for front, rear, and sub, thats all your going to have.

IMO Get separate amps, Good amps are cheap these days anyway..

yeh i was just looking at that
its about the same price for one 5ch amp as it is for a 4ch and a 2ch

After you get the bite, i.e. you think your system is good until you actually hear a good system, you will want to upgrade. trust me happens to us all:P

alright next question is:
what would be the best amp to power these:
Pioneer 380W 3-Way 6 1/2"
Pioneer 440W 4-Way 6X9"
for around $300?

Is it possible for you to get the rms specs of those speakers? Because the 380watts specs you have given is not the rms..it is the max which will not tell you how powerful your amp needs to be!!!!

Gonna take a guess and say the 6 1/2's are 60w RMS and the 6x9"s are 80w RMS. Personally, a 4x60w Pioneer will be plenty, those speakers no offense aren't worth spending big $$$ on an amp for.

Jaycar 4x100 wouldn't be a bad way to go if your happy to spend the full $300.

The ZX350.4 by kicker is also an option. That does 60wrmsX4 and is much better quality than pioneer ( in my opinion).. but it does cost an extra $100 ....

Also the bragging rights you get from owning a Kicker makes it worth the extra hundred i rekon...

For $300 stick with Jaycar response - best bang for your buck, and look half decent too.

+1 for the jaycar response. I've only heard good things about their amps and considering you're not overly interested in car audio and therefore could hardly care about the bragging rights associated with certain brands, they really are the best bang for your buck.

Pretty much your options are as follows (in order of preference):

- 4 channel for all the speakers and a mono for the sub

- 2 channel for the front speakers and a mono for the sub

- 4 channel for the front speakers and the sub, with 2 of the channels bridged for the sub

Basically the first option is probably the best but it is also the most expensive. It really comes down to how much money you're willing to spend.
